Governors State University is a participant in the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI), which allows students to follow a general education core curriculum (GECC) that transfers smoothly from over 100 participating schools into all of the undergraduate programs at GovState. Requirements

Transfer applicant must provide official transcripts from previously attended colleges and/or universities, have earned at least 24 college credit hours, and must meet the cumulative GPA requirements for their desired program. 

Additional information about university admission policies can be found below.

College Credit Hours

To enroll as a transfer student at GovState, you must have earned 24 or more college credit hours.

If you have earned less than 24 credit hours, you must apply as a freshman.

GPA

Applicants are required to have at least a GPA of 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. Please note that some programs may require a higher GPA for admission.

Transcripts

All applicants are required to provide official transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities. Transcripts can be sent to the Admissions Office.

Application Process

Applying to Governors State University as a transfer starts with an online application. You'll need to send in your official collegiate transcripts and meet the minimum GPA requirement. Additional materials may be needed based on program requirements.

    All applicants are required to submit all official transcripts to Governors State University. Students are required to submit official transcripts from all colleges previously attended.

    Remember: Your application is not complete until official transcript(s) from all of your previously attended institutions have been received.

    International applicants are required to have their official transcripts evaluated by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES). In house evaluations are available upon request. 

    Document Retention

    Please note that all documents submitted to Governors State University for admission purposes become the property of the university. Documents will not be released to students nor will they be forwarded to other educational institutions or agencies.

    Programs that require an associate degree:

    • RN to BSN Completion Program
    • Business and Applied Science
    • Manufacturing Management

    Social Work requires two letters of recommendation. A form will be sent to your recommenders via email once your application is submitted. 

    Credentials Evaluation

    Once you have submitted all required application materials for the program for which you applied, please allow 5-7 business days for evaluation and processing. 

    Some programs have application deadlines. If your program has an application deadline, the evaluation process may take longer. You will be notified once a decision has been made via email and U.S. mail of the admission decision.

    Letter of Admission Decision

    After your application has been processed, you will receive a letter from the Office of Admissions with your admission decision via your application portal. 

    Dual Degree Program

    The Dual Degree Program (DDP) is a unique partnership between GovState and 17 Chicagoland community colleges that provides transfer students with a seamless pathway to earn quality, accessible, and affordable associate and bachelor's degrees. Students who enroll in the Dual Degree Program while completing their associate degree, then graduate and transfer to GovState, will be able to take advantage of exclusive benefits only available to DDP participants. It is free, no obligation, and easy to enroll.
