Accreditations for CHHS

What difference does it make if your academic program is accredited or not? All the difference in the world. Accreditation is an assurance of quality. It's a key mechanism for ensuring that our College's academic programs meet the highest professional standards that have been established by the outside agencies that govern the educational standards for the professions they represent. It's all about excellence -- and that's what the College of Health and Human Services is all about.

Licensure or Certification

Some programs require accreditation by the appropriate agency in order for their students to be eligible to take licensing examinations or to be certified after graduation. For example, the College's Master of Social Work program is accredited through the Counsel on Social Work Education. Most states require graduation from a program accredited by CSWE before a student will be eligible for licensure.

CHHS University Accreditation

Accreditations of degree programs are in addition to accreditation for the University. Governors State University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

The Master of Occupational Therapy(MOT) program has full accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA).

Graduates of the program are able to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be a Registered Occupational Therapist (ROT).

Most states, including Illinois, require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. A felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.
