Here are the steps to get you started!
- Start thinking about your reason for studying abroad. Take into consideration the term that will work for you, your major, where you would like to study and if the location and program offerings will benefit your academic and professional career. GovState recommends that you study abroad through one of our affiliated program providers. One way in which you can filter through the options and narrow down your preferences is through the affiliated provider websites. If you do not find what you are looking for, you can also search a larger database on the website Institute of International Education. You can also search study abroad reviews at Study Abroad 101.
- Make an appointment with OIS (studyabroad@govst.edu) to discuss your options and the next steps.
- Complete your GovState Study Abroad Application which includes getting course approval from your GovState Advisor and Dean by having him/her fill out the Study Abroad Course Approval Form (contact studyabroad@govst.edu for form).
- Upon confirmation from GovState that you are eligible to study abroad and your credits will transfer, you can apply to the independent study abroad program.
- Upon confirmation of participation from the independent study program, students must submit a copy of their passport to OIS.
- Meet with the Financial Aid Office to determine how financial aid may apply to the program abroad.
- Students can apply for the GovState Study Abroad Scholarship located on our study abroad scholarship page (please reach out to studyabroad@govst.edu for the application deadline).
- Finally, our office will also assist you in purchasing international health insurance through GovState and help prepare you for departure.
