Governors State’s Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Counselor Education and Supervision (CES) prepares experienced counselors for opportunities in the fields of higher education and advanced clinical practice in professional counseling and supervision.
A foundation in education and counseling theory, and supervision models, combined with advanced clinical work, teaching, supervising, research and scholarship, and leadership and advocacy opportunities, will equip you to lead, represent, and empower counselors and those they serve in the field.
Candidates must have a master's degree in counseling or in a closely related field.

Application deadlines for Fall 2027:
- Priority application deadline: February 15, 2027
- Final application deadline: April 19, 2027

A Ph.D. degree prepares experienced counselors to become influential instructors, supervisors, researchers, and leaders by increasing expertise in the areas of teaching, supervision, research, advocacy, theory, and professional identity, among others. Specialization in your area of interest and goals post-degree, and the development of a scholarship agenda, creates opportunities to have a meaningful impact on the counseling profession and practice.

Program Requirements
- A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher from a Master's degree to be admitted
- Master's degree in counseling or a closely related field
Application Materials
- Official transcript(s) from all previous college work
- Three personal references by professionals who hold a Doctorate or Master's degree in counseling or a related field (an automatic email will be sent to these individuals)
- Statement describing personal and professional goals (prompt found in catalog)
- Professionally written essay addressing your professional counselor identify and integration of social justice advocacy (prompt found in catalog)
