  1. Background 

    The title Professor Emeritus or Associate Professor Emeritus may be conferred upon a 
    retiring faculty member by the Board of Trustees of the university upon the 
    recommendation of the President. Professors Emeriti are expected to maintain a continuing 
    interest in scholarly activity and in higher education, to have been a faculty member whose 
    advice may appropriately be sought in professional matters affecting the university, and/or a 
    faculty member who may serve as a mentor to faculty and students, and one to whom former 
    students and colleagues can reasonably apply for personal letters of recommendation.

    In making a recommendation to the Board of Trustees, the President shall consider the 
    recommendations of the tenured/tenure-track [“Unit A”] faculty members in the candidate’s 
    college/unit, the dean/director of the college/unit, and the provost. The University President 
    shall inform the candidate and departmental faculty of the Board’s decision.

    (Note: Any faculty member who retired holding the designation of “University Professor” 
    and who was entitled to benefits under the now-deprecated Policy 42 (Benefits for Retired 
    Professors) is entitled to receive the privileges listed in section III of this policy. Any retired 
    University Professor entitled to privileges under this policy will not be considered a 
    Professor or Associate Professor Emeritus absent successful application and award of such
    status, as detailed below.)

  2. Requirements
    1. Candidates must hold the title of Associate Professor, Professor, or University Professor. 
    2. Candidates must have completed at least ten years of service to the university. 
    3. Candidates must be retired from GovState at the time of conferral of the Emeritus title.
  3. Privileges
    1. The awarding of Emeritus status will be accompanied by the following privileges: 
      1. Faculty identification card. 
      2. Library privileges. 
      3. Listing in the university catalog. 
      4. Free campus parking privileges. 
      5. Faculty privileges in attending the university's academic, social, cultural, and athletic events. 
      6. Access to research facilities and use of office space, if available as determined in the discretion of the university. 
      7. Ability to maintain telephone, telephone number, email and voice mail account, as available as determined in the discretion of the university. 
      8. Faculty privileges in the University Bookstore. 
    2. Persons afforded the above privileges are required to abide by all applicable law, regulation and university policy and procedure. Failure to do so may result in the revocation of such privilege or privileges within the sole discretion of the university.
  4. Emeritus Status Application Process
    1. Candidates for Professor Emeritus or Associate Professor Emeritus shall 
      apply to the University President when requirements have been met, but no
      earlier than the semester before the candidate’s retirement. The University
      President shall forward this application to the dean of the faculty member’s 
      college/unit.
    2. The candidate’s application and curriculum vitae will be distributed to the faculty 
      members of the appropriate college/unit by the appropriate dean or designee. 
      Recommendations for approval of candidates must be approved by a majority
      vote (50% + 1) of eligible full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty members in a
      college/unit. The vote shall take place while faculty are on contract per the 
      GovState-UPI Agreement (the period of time all Unit A University are available to 
      work).
    3. The recommendation of the faculty shall be forwarded to the appropriate 
      dean/director.
    4. The dean/directorshall make his/her recommendation and forward his/her
      recommendation and application together with the recommendation of the 
      college/unit to the Provost.
    5. The Provost shall make his/her recommendation and forward his/her
      recommendation to the University President [with the application and faculty’s 
      recommendation].
    6. The President make his/her determination and shall present those candidates he/she 
      recommends for consideration by the Board of Trustees.
    7. The Board of Trustees may award Emeritus status upon the recommendation of the University President.
