Introduction
Governors State University recognizes the academic value of approved Illinois law enforcement academy training. Eligible law enforcement professionals may receive Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) toward the Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice.

- Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) may be awarded for successful completion of an approved Illinois law enforcement academy.
- CPL applies toward the Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice.
- Students seeking Credit for Prior Learning must enroll in the Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and work with the Criminal Justice Program to complete the CPL evaluation. Students who later change majors may have applicable CPL counted as elective credit in accordance with university degree requirements.
- Applicants must submit official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities, official Joint Service Transcripts (if applicable), and the required documentation verifying successful completion of an approved law enforcement academy.
- Students with prior college coursework, military education, or other eligible learning experiences may receive additional transfer or CPL credit following university evaluation.
- The Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice is available both online and on campus.
- Students may transfer up to 90 total credit hours toward the 120-credit bachelor's degree.
- A minimum of 30 credit hours must be completed, or earned while enrolled, at Governors State University.
Eligibility
This opportunity is available to eligible Illinois law enforcement professionals, including current officers, retired officers, and qualified former officers, subject to university admission requirements and official academic evaluation.
