Chemistry, B.S.
The study of chemistry allows us to understand the world around us. Chemistry is often called the “central science” because it connects biology, physics, mathematics, medicine, and environmental science. Governors State’s Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, approved by the American Chemical Society, equips students with foundational knowledge in the concepts of analytical, biochemical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, while emphasizing real-world applications and research opportunities.
For many chemistry students, a position in a laboratory is a reachable dream. Work as a laboratory assistant or technician before furthering your education and becoming a chemist. Working at the forefront of scientific research is a thrilling option for dedicated students.
At GovState, the Bachelor of Science in Chemistry program prepares students to explore the science behind medicine, energy, environmental sustainability, biotechnology, and advanced materials. Students gain hands-on laboratory experience, develop analytical and problem-solving skills, and work closely with faculty mentors in small class settings.
Students learn through modern laboratory experiences, collaborative projects, and faculty-guided research that prepares them for careers in industry, healthcare, education, environmental science, and graduate study. The program is designed for students who want to make discoveries, solve complex problems, and improve lives through science.
If you’re passionate about science education, this may be your first stepping stone to education. Work with students or professionals to spread awareness of the benefits of scientific research. Come alongside researchers as a science writer, teacher, professor, or marketing professional and use your knowledge of chemistry to bridge the gap between researchers and the public.
A foundation of chemistry knowledge is also an excellent opportunity to advance your career in medicine. Train to enter medical school or launch a career as a nurse to put your knowledge of chemistry and biology to work caring for your community.

Financial Aid and Scholarships
Financial aid and scholarships at Governors State University (GovState) are designed to help students make their degree more affordable through a combination of federal, state, institutional, and private funding options. To begin the process, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) using GovState’s school code (009145), which determines eligibility for grants, loans, work-study, and many scholarship opportunities.
Grants like the Federal Pell Grant and FSEOG don’t need to be repaid and are awarded based on financial need, while Federal Direct Loans provide borrowed funds that must be repaid with interest. In addition to need-based aid, GovState offers merit and institutional scholarships — including highly competitive awards such as Presidential, Provost, and Dean’s Scholarships for incoming students — and ongoing scholarship opportunities through platforms like Scholarship Universe.
Specialized awards, such as the Earthrise Scholarship and others offered via the GovState Foundation, also help offset costs for students across many academic areas. The Office of Financial Aid is available year-round to guide students through applications, award offers, and planning to ensure financial support aligns with individual academic goals.
