American Studies, Minor

The American Studies minor at Governors State University offers students an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the United States by integrating perspectives from history, political science, sociology, and related fields. Students examine how social, cultural, and political forces have shaped American life, gaining insight into issues such as identity, inequality, governance, and community.

Designed to complement a wide range of majors, this minor helps students develop strong analytical and critical thinking skills that are highly transferable across professions. Whether paired with degrees in communication, criminal justice, education, or the humanities, the program enhances your ability to interpret complex social dynamics and engage thoughtfully with contemporary issues.

Financial Aid and Scholarships

Governors State University offers a range of financial aid options to help undergraduate students make their degree more affordable, including federal, state, institutional, and private funding. To get started, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) using GovState's school code (009145). The FAFSA determines eligibility for grants, loans, work-study programs, and many scholarship opportunities.

Grants, including the Federal Pell Grant and the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), are awarded based on financial need and do not require repayment. Federal Direct Loans provide borrowed funds that must be repaid with interest after graduation.
