GSU STAR Student Success Network

Here at Governors State University, we take pride in helping students achieve their goals from the time they enter college until they graduate. To that end, GovState has adopted the GSUStar Student Success Network. This palette of tools connects you with faculty, advisors, and GovState services in your success network … all at your fingertips.  Utilizing the Starfish platform, the STAR acronym represents four integral elements of this platform:

  •  Success: Studies show students utilizing Starfish are more likely to succeed.
  • Teamwork: In a student’s network, the student, staff, and faculty work together as a team.
  • Achievement: We acknowledge students’ achievements.
  • Recognition: We give recognition/kudos for those achievements.

Benefits of being a GSUStar student include:

Success Network

Each student has a success network of faculty and staff working together to help you achieve success. Faculty and staff will send you feedback about course progress as well as kudos and stars to acknowledge accomplishments. You’ll also receive early notifications about academic issues such as midterm grades. GSUSTAR allows students to look up their classes, schedule appointments with their advisor, and more!

What are flag alerts?

Throughout the semester faculty can submit a flag alert to GSUSTAR to notify a student when there is a concern about performance or success in a class. Flag alerts are created to warn students that they need to take action to be successful in the course. Some examples of flags are "in danger of failing," "attendance concern," "missing/late assignments," "low quiz scores," or "low participation." The student's advisor and retention coaches also receive the flag alerts to ensure outreach is made to support the student.  Some flags result from Progress Surveys and Midterm Grades.

What do I do if I receive a flag alert?

Students who are notified about a flag concern should contact their faculty as soon as possible to get guidance on how to improve in the course. Students can also make an appointment with their academic advisor or retention coach to discuss the flag and get connected with additional support resources.

What are kudos?

A faculty member can submit kudos into GSU STAR any time during the semester to notify a student when they are doing a good job in a class or have recently demonstrated improvement. Kudos are designed as positive reinforcements to encourage the student along their academic journey. We also have kudos for other information that support you as a student and promote your success.

What is a referral?

A referral via GSUSTAR allows instructors or advisors to connect students with additional campus resources.
