Financial Aid and Scholarships
Financial aid and scholarships at Governors State University (GovState) are designed to help students make their degree more affordable through a combination of federal, state, institutional, and private funding options. To begin the process, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) using GovState’s school code (009145), which determines eligibility for grants, loans, work-study, and many scholarship opportunities.
Grants like the Federal Pell Grant and FSEOG don’t need to be repaid and are awarded based on financial need, while Federal Direct Loans provide borrowed funds that must be repaid with interest. In addition to need-based aid, GovState offers merit and institutional scholarships — including highly competitive awards such as Presidential, Provost, and Dean’s Scholarships for incoming students — and ongoing scholarship opportunities through platforms like Scholarship Universe.
Specialized awards, such as the Earthrise Scholarship and others offered via the GovState Foundation, also help offset costs for students across many academic areas. The Office of Financial Aid is available year-round to guide students through applications, award offers, and planning to ensure financial support aligns with individual academic goals.
