  • Sponsor: The university itself
  • Form required: I-20
  • Work options:
    • Limited on-campus work (up to 20 hours/week during school)
    • Optional Practical Training (OPT) after graduation (up to 12–36 months depending on field)
  • Flexibility:
    • Can transfer between schools
    • Can extend program if needed

Best fit

  • Students planning to earn a degree in the U.S.
  • Students who may want work experience after graduation

J-1 Visa (Exchange Visitor Visa)

The J-1 visa is designed for exchange programs and cultural experiences.

Who it’s for

  • Exchange students (often 1–2 semesters)
  • Students sponsored by governments, universities, or organizations
  • Participants in structured exchange programs

Key features

  • Issued for: Cultural and academic exchange programs
  • Sponsor: A designated sponsor (not always the university)
  • Form required: DS-2019
  • Work options:
    • Limited, must be approved by sponsor
    • Academic Training (similar to OPT, but more restricted)

    • Some students must return to their home country for 2 years after the program before applying for certain U.S. visas

Best fit

  • Students coming for a short-term exchange
  • Students funded by scholarships or government programs
  • Students focused on cultural exchange, not long-term U.S. stay
