VoiceThread is an interactive collaboration and sharing tool that enables users to add images, documents, and videos.

We regret to inform you that the Center for Teaching and Learning will no longer support VoiceThread after the Spring 2025 semester. We encourage users to transition their VoiceThread work by/before June 30 2025, as VoiceThread will no longer be available.

Following the expiration of the GovState VoiceThread license on June 30th, 2025, accessing VoiceThread will trigger a prompt guiding you through the process of dissociating your account from the GovState license. This dissociation is necessary if you wish to retain access to your VoiceThread materials. If you no longer require access to your content, no action is needed. This is a self-service process, meaning previous CTL administrators for VoiceThread will be unable to assist with this transition. Each user is responsible for individually disassociating their account to maintain access. It is imperative to complete this disassociation within one year of the license expiration date, as failure to do so will result in the permanent deletion of your account, including all VoiceThreads and associated content you have created.

Faculty can use Panopto, which allows for both interactive multimedia discussions and video hosting. For more information, please visit the Panopto tutorials.

Users can add voice, text, audio file, or video comments. This software is integrated into the Tools section of a content area within Blackboard. To learn more about VoiceThread, please use the links below.

This tutorial will discuss how add VoiceThread to your Blackboard course. Once added to the Blackboard course, students may click on the link to create their VoiceThread account and link to the appropriate content.

Create New VoiceThreads

This tutorial will discuss how create new VoiceThreads. You may find a file from your computer, select a Media Source (Khan Academy, Flickr, Google Drive, New York Public Library), upload an audio recording, upload a webcam photo, upload a webcam video and/or add a URL.

Assignment Builder: Create a VoiceThread

Require students to create a full VoiceThread. They will upload the slides and record comments, then submit that to you for a grade. You can even allow students to see their classmates’ submissions later so they can engage in peer review and conversation, which is great for student presentations, demonstration of a skill (bedside manner, playing an instrument, painting/drawing technique, pitching a business), or submitting a paper, wireframe, website, etc. to receive feedback.

Require students to watch a VoiceThread in full, which is great for non-interactive lecture delivery or compliance and training.

Require students to post comments on a VoiceThread that you have created. You can decide whether or not students can see one another’s comments, which is great for graded discussions, quizzes, or speaking practice (public speaking, language practice, poetry out loud).

Grading Assignments

Instead of grading in Blackboard, from either Full Grade Center or Needs Grading, you will grade VoiceThread assignments, using the VoiceThread interface.

How to Comment

Open the VoiceThread, navigate to the slide you'd like to record a comment. At the bottom of the slide, select the "+" icon to open commenting tools, such as audio from microphone, text, video from webcam, audio from telephone, audio/video from pre-recorded file, and replying to another comment.
