Jennifer Artis Scholarship

Jennifer Artis lived her life devoted to addressing health disparities, community health development and advocacy, and bringing quality healthcare to economically disadvantaged communities in the South Suburbs. Central to that work was coordinating community and faith-based organizations and residents to develop a regional health care system to address the fragmentation of health care in the southern suburbs. The following outlines her impactful work:

  • • Established the first All-Volunteer Free Health Clinic in Englewood in 1982.
  • • Created a federally qualified clinic for residents of Leclaire Courts Housing Development in Marquette Park in 1998.
  • • Established the Family Health Society, a clinic developed for St. James and area Rotarians to address the health issues of the working poor in 1996.
  • • Created the Crossroads Coalition, in 1997, a coalition of more than 90 participants representing community, faith-based, and civic organizations, dedicated to addressing access to health care, health literacy, health equity, advocacy, and empowering residents of the South Suburbs to manage their health.
  • • The Senior Provider Network comprised of over 75 individuals representing more than 40 senior provider organizations in the southern suburbs was an initiative created in 2006. In collaboration with the senior life program of Ingalls Hospital and the Jewish Federation, this network addresses a host of senior issues and provides a forum for collaboration and resource referrals.
  • • Established the Southland Health Care Forum, to promote workforce development and healthcare career development, leading to certificate programs as a Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant, and Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • • Co-created, along with the Southland clergy, the Southland Ministerial Health Network to promote the role of faith-based organizations in organizing and maintaining human communities that are healthy.
  • • Served as Director of Community Services/Public Affairs for Franciscan St. James Hospital for 16 years.
  • • Served as Village Trustee for the Village of Richton Park.
