Dr. Ana C. Kong Scholarship

 

The family of Dr. Ana C. Kong has generously endowed a scholarship in memory of Dr. Ana C. Kong who passed away in June 2022. The scholarship is a competitive award of $1,200 annually and is available for application to full or part time Juniors and Seniors studying for a BA in Communications and Graduate students getting an MA in Communication, Media, and Performance Arts.

Ana was born in Manila, Philippines on August 9, 1940, the daughter of Wong Choon and Lee Shi. She graduated from the Far Eastern University in Manila in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce, Magna Cum Laude. She came to the United States in 1967 and earned a Master of Science and Ph. D. in Communication Science from the University of Illinois Champaign-Urbana. She met her husband, Pedro, at the University where he was obtaining his Master of Science and Ph. D. in Mechanical Engineering. They married in Manila in 1970.

After graduating, Ana and Pedro moved to the Chicagoland area and settled in Homewood with their three children. Ana joined the faculty at Governors State University in 1972 and became a tenured professor in the Communications Department in 1977. Following retirement, she was awarded the title of Faculty Professor Emeritus by GSU’s Board of Trustees in 2007. During her 34-year career at GSU, she received many recognitions and awards from students and faculty. She was a highly regarded professor and advisor.

Eligibility:

  • 1. $1,200 which can be used for tuition, books, and fees.
  • 2. Must be enrolled the below program.
    • a. BA Communication
  • 3. Undergraduate Students
    • a. Must remain enrolled for the term in which the scholarship is to be used.
  • 4. For a full or part-time student
  • 5. Number of scholarships: one per semester (Fall and Spring)
    • a. Number can change depending on account balance and upon mutual agreement with Benefactor.
  • 6. Awarded in the Fall and Spring cycles. Must apply for each cycle.
  • 7. Good academic standing (2.0+)

Award Information:

One scholarship at 1,200 dollars which can be used for tuition, books, and fees.

Note: Award amounts may vary based on funding, availability, and addition, if any, to principal. Amount awarded shall not exceed tuition costs.
