Governors State University’s First-Year Writing Program is committed to providing a foundational understanding of the discipline of Writing Studies.

We envision that the first-year writing courses students take will provide transferrable knowledge and habits on the topics of rhetoric, writing processes, and genre, which will serve as a foundation to continued, life-long learning and growth for student writers.

With this focus in mind, our program draws from research in “Writing about Writing” and uses it as a way to shape our teaching. The First-year Writing Program’s two-course sequence is a center-piece for GSU’s innovative general education curriculum, which enrolls all incoming freshmen in one of three theme-based learning communities/cohorts focused on the issues of civic engagement, global citizenship, and sustainability.
