Get a Certificate in Online Teaching and Learning from GSU!

  • Certificate in Online Teaching Courses:

    -

    Students must take these courses in sequential order.

    • ONTL 6101: Introduction to Online Teaching
      Prerequisites: Bachelor’s degree or above required. Students must have basic computer skills, such as being able to download files, type posts, and communicate with others online.
    • ONTL 6201: The Role of the Online Instructor
      Prerequisites: Admission to the Certificate in Online Teaching program. Successful completion of ONTL 6101.
    • ONTL 6850: Introduction to Design
      Prerequisites: Admission to the Certificate in Online Teaching program. Completion of the following courses with a grade of “B” or better: ONTL 6101: Introduction to Online Teaching; ONTL 6201: The Role of the Instructor.
    • ONTL 7101: Course Design & Assessment
      Prerequisites: Admission to the Certificate in Online Teaching program. Successful completion of the following courses with a grade of “B” or better: ONTL 6101: Introduction to Online Teaching; ONTL 6201: The Role of the Instructor; ONTL 6850 Introduction to Design.
    • ONTL 7105: Technology Tools for Online Educators
      Prerequisites: Admission to the Certificate in Online Teaching program. Completion of the following courses with a grade of “B” or better: ONTL 6101: Introduction to Online Teaching.
    • ONTL 7201: Course Production Practicum
      Prerequisites: Admission to the Certificate in Online Teaching program. Completion of the following courses with a grade of “B” or better: ONTL 6101: Introduction to Online Teaching; ONTL 6201: The Role of the Instructor; ONTL 6850: Introduction to Design; ONTL 7101: Course Design & Assessment; ONTL 7105: Technology Tools for Online Educators

  • New GSU Students:

    Students must first be admitted to Governors State University to complete the certificate program. For information on GSU application procedures, see Applying to Governors State University.

    An Application form for admission to the certificate program at GSU is available online.​ The completed application, including admission fee, should be mailed to:

    You will also need to contact undergraduate institution(s) to have transcripts sent (including all previous college work attempted) to Governors State University at the address listed above.

    Apply early! Application approval may take 2-4 weeks once all materials are received.

  • Existing GSU Students:

    Current GSU students may add the Certificate to their existing program/degree. For example, if accounting students who completed their B.A. are working on their Masters, they would have to fill out a Change of Program Form. On the form, students should fill out personal information and list Certificate 1 as the Certificate in Online Teaching under New Curriculum Information. The form must be signed by the current advisor and sent to the ONTL Advisor. The ONTL Advisor will obtain the appropriate signatures and send to the Registrars Office for processing.

  • Certificate Forms:

    Change of Program Form: Use this form only if you are a new, continuing or undeclared student. If you are a non-degree seeking student, please contact the Admissions Office to apply to a program.

    Veterans Benefit Form: This form is for veterans who tutition is paid for by their G.I. benefits. Please fill out this form and send to the ONTL advisor.

    Immunization Form: If you are exempt because you exclusively attend classes at an off-site location or are exclusively enrolled in an online degree program, then download the Immunization Exemption Form and submit. Note that a new Exemption Form, signed by your advisor, must be submitted every semester on or before the current Immunization Deadline.

    Student Study Plan and Award of Certificate (myGSU portal login): These forms need to be filled out after completion of the last certificate course and submitted to the Registrar's Office to receive the certificate. This Registrar process may take about 6-8 weeks.

 

The Certificate in Online Teaching is approved by the Illinois Board of Higher Education. This 18-credit hour certificate program may benefit individuals seeking to gain formal experience in online instruction. Students who complete this program must still meet employment qualifications for becoming an online instructor within their State, and Academic or Corporate institutions.
