Dr. Toya Garnes (M.H.S. ’08) — Empowering Wellness Through Service and Connection

For Dr. Toya Garnes (M.H.S. ’08), education has always been about more than grades—it’s been a foundation for discipline, character, and opportunity. Growing up, her family viewed education as a key to unlocking the future and a means of shaping one’s purpose. “While good grades were celebrated in our household, the importance of education also provided a spirit of perseverance, service, and continuous growth,” she shared.
A proud first-generation college graduate, Dr. Garnes’s educational journey was deeply inspired by her family’s commitment to success. Her mother put her own academic goals on hold so Dr. Garnes could complete her education, later earning her own Bachelor’s degree in 2019 and Master of Divinity in 2024. “There were moments of uncertainty and financial challenges,” Dr. Garnes recalled, “but I was able to connect with mentors for support who helped guide me through the process.”
That drive to serve others led Dr. Garnes to Governors State University, where she earned her Master of Health Science in Addiction Studies (M.H.S. ’08). “I have a passion to help people using holistic methods,” she said. “Governors State offered a program that combined science, compassion, and real-world application. I saw this degree as an opportunity to expand my ability to serve the community and blend it into my chiropractic calling.”
Her experience at GovState was marked by academic rigor and deep support. “The professors at Governors State were knowledgeable and supportive. I was challenged academically and encouraged to think critically,” she said. Among those who left a lasting impact were Professor James Golding, Professor Mark Sanders, and Dr. Greg Blevins—educators who strengthened her confidence and helped shape her professional direction.
After completing her master’s degree, Dr. Garnes was inspired to pursue a Doctor of Chiropractic degree, seeing it as a natural extension of her holistic philosophy. “I wanted to help people in a way that combined hands-on care, holistic wellness, and science,” she said. “Chiropractic aligned perfectly with my vision—it allows me to support the body naturally and empower people to take charge of their health.”
In 2025, Dr. Garnes launched her own practice, Ancestral Roots Chiropractic, a milestone she describes as both personal and powerful. “Launching my business represents my vision, lessons, and passion,” she explained. “My goal is to provide excellent and convenient care for the community. I wanted to create a space where people feel seen, supported, and empowered so they can thrive physically, mentally, and emotionally.”
For Dr. Garnes, wellness extends far beyond physical health. “Holistic wellness means acknowledging that health is emotional, mental, and spiritual,” she said. “Everything is connected—it helps us thrive, live in vitality, and embrace our purpose.”
As Co-Chair of the Governors State University Alumni Association Board, Dr. Garnes takes great pride in giving back to the institution that helped shape her journey. “The most rewarding part is being able to give back to the university that shaped me,” she said. “I enjoy creating meaningful experiences and supporting networks that uplift others while continuing to grow.”
She believes alumni engagement plays a vital role in sustaining the GovState legacy. “Alumni engagement is powerful—it promotes internal growth, strengthens programs, and builds community,” she said. “It’s a way to inspire students and provide real-world perspectives that can change someone’s trajectory.”
Outside of her professional and leadership roles, Dr. Garnes finds joy in serving on executive boards, spending time with her family, and engaging in work that keeps her grounded. She is also a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Rotary International, Umu Igbo Unite, and the Illinois Chiropractic Society.
Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Garnes credits GovState’s supportive community for helping her achieve her dreams. “Our journeys are not linear—that’s what makes them meaningful,” she said. “That’s the beauty of Governors State University: the support, the connection, and the community. With perseverance and dedication, anything is possible.”
