Empowering Change through Education, Leadership, and Purpose

Dr. Michael Rivas

For Dr. Michael Rivas, education has always symbolized something far greater than a degree—it has meant freedom, opportunity, and the power to create a better future.

Growing up on the south side of San Antonio, Texas, Dr. Rivas came from humble beginnings. His grandmother, the most educated member of his family at the time, had only completed sixth grade. Witnessing the limitations imposed by poverty, his father resolved to break the cycle and discovered that education was the key. That journey led his father to earn a doctorate and become an assistant professor at the University of Texas in San Antonio—planting the seeds of academic ambition that would later blossom in Dr. Rivas himself.

“My family taught me that education means freedom,” he shared. “It means the opportunity to live a life beyond your circumstances.”

Motivated by the desire to provide even more for his own family, Dr. Rivas set his sights on earning a doctorate in Occupational Therapy. With Illinois Veterans Grant support and deep respect for the faculty he had already come to know, choosing Governors State University was an easy decision.

“GovState was perfect,” he said. “I didn’t even consider attending anywhere else.”

Dr. Rivas speaks of Governors State as one of Illinois’ best-kept secrets—a university rich in history, professionalism, and opportunity. “It’s a hidden gem,” he said. “When I face new challenges at work, I always go back to the foundation GovState gave me. It gives me the confidence to persevere and achieve new heights.”

That foundation became especially valuable as Dr. Rivas transitioned into a leadership role in risk services, where he now helps businesses across the country mitigate complex healthcare-related risks. “At GovState, I learned to break down problems, research, and develop strategic solutions. That approach has helped me support thousands of clients,” he explained.

One defining moment in his career came shortly after earning his doctorate, when he presented findings from his capstone project during a high-stakes pitch for a geriatric care client. “My presentation helped secure a $1 million contract—our company’s largest ever. That win changed the trajectory of my career and ultimately led to company ownership,” he recalled. “My GovState education was the competitive advantage.”

Dr. Rivas has stayed deeply connected to his alma mater, currently serving on the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) Advisory Board. He’s excited about the future of health education at GovState, particularly in areas like driver’s rehabilitation, artificial intelligence, and addressing the nation’s aging population. “GovState is moving toward where the puck is going, not where it is today,” he said. “Dr. Balthazar is an incredible leader and I’m honored to support this important work.”

Outside of his professional endeavors, Dr. Rivas participates in Vistage, an executive leadership group that brings together thought leaders from different industries to tackle challenges, stay current on government and market trends, and grow as professionals. “We push each other to be better leaders,” he said. “It’s a space of accountability and mutual support.”

To those considering higher education, Dr. Rivas offers heartfelt encouragement:

“There will be people who question your ambitions—people who say, ‘Why do you need a doctorate?’ But when you succeed, those same people will ask, ‘How did you do it?’ Chase your dreams—even if you must walk alone. It’s worth it in the end.”

Through grit, gratitude, and GovState pride, Dr. Michael Rivas continues to redefine what’s possible—for himself, for his family, and for future leaders across the healthcare industry.
