The Journey of GovState Alum Megan Clarke: A Tale of Perseverance and Passion

Megan Clarke’s journey from communications to nursing highlights the transformative power of education, mentorship, and pursuing one’s passions. Raised with a strong emphasis on education, Megan’s parents instilled the belief that a college degree would be the key to independence. Their father’s work at the Illinois Institute of Technology fueled their desire to achieve excellence and set them on the path to higher education.
When Megan transferred to Governors State University (GovState), they found a supportive community that made all the difference. “I now realize how lucky I was to have GovState, particularly Jason Zingsheim’s guidance,” they recall. Jason, their academic advisor, helped them navigate course selection, financial aid, and staying on track to graduate. The sense of belonging and mentorship they received at GovState played a key role in their success.
Megan also found that the strong community at GovState was a place where everyone, from peers to professors, was genuinely invested in helping each other succeed. “It felt like a place where others really had your best interest in mind,” they said. Even after graduating, Megan stays in touch with their professors and classmates, finding joy in watching them thrive and continue to make a difference.
GovState provided Megan with the critical thinking skills and confidence needed for their professional career. As a Program Manager at Girls Rugby Inc., they used their degree in communications to grow the organization and connect diverse communities toward a common goal. “GovState taught me how to connect diverse communities towards one common goal,” they explain.
After a successful career in nonprofit work and leadership roles, Megan’s life took a turn when a neck injury led them to reconsider their path. They returned to school, earning their CNA license while balancing a full-time job and nursing coursework. Despite being older than many of their classmates, Megan was determined to become a nurse. “I felt compelled to transform my life for the better,” they said.
Today, Megan works as an orthopedic and spine nurse at Swedish Medical Center in Denver, where their personal experience with injury helps them empathize with their patients. Their holistic approach to pain management focuses on physical and emotional healing. They find balance in their career by continuing to support Girls Rugby, teaching young athletes leadership skills and seeing them grow.
Megan's advice to others considering a career change is to embrace the journey with a growth mindset. “It’s never too late to learn something new,” they said. Their journey from communications to nursing is a testament to the power of education, mentorship, and the unwavering pursuit of one’s passion.
The Alumni Association at Governors State University is incredibly proud of Megan Clarke and all they have accomplished. Their determination, resilience, and commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others embody the values we hold dear at GovState. Megan’s story inspires us all, and we look forward to watching them continue to grow and thrive in their personal and professional journey.
