Giving Back Where It All Began: Derrick Brown’s GovState Story

Derrick O. Brown is a proud Governors State University alumnus whose journey reflects a deep commitment to education, leadership, and student success. A two-time graduate of GovState, Derrick earned his Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies in 2017 and his Master of Arts in Communication Studies in 2019. Today, he serves as the Assistant Director of the Academic Resource Center and an adjunct professor, continuing to support students in meaningful and impactful ways.
In his current role, Derrick oversees New Student Orientation, coordinates the peer mentoring program, and supports campus-wide retention initiatives. He collaborates closely with faculty and campus partners and serves on several university committees focused on advancing student success. One of the most rewarding aspects of his work, he shares, is witnessing former students, student workers, and graduate assistants he has mentored walk across the commencement stage.
Education has long been a cornerstone of Derrick’s family. Spanning multiple generations, many of his relatives—including his mother, sister, and extended family members—earned degrees from Governors State University. This powerful legacy of learning has shaped Derrick’s values and reinforced his belief in lifelong education. A guiding principle passed down from his grandfather continues to influence his outlook: always surround yourself with people who know both more and less than you, creating opportunities for growth, humility, and continuous learning.
Derrick’s decision to attend GovState was shaped by family, circumstance, and connection. After beginning his college journey at Prairie State College, he transferred to Governors State University, where he quickly found a sense of belonging. That connection fueled his deep involvement on campus and laid the foundation for his leadership journey. During his undergraduate years, Derrick founded Trans4mation Gospel Choir, inspired by his lifelong love of music and fellowship. What began as informal gatherings among friends grew into a lasting student organization rooted in faith, community, and transformation. Today, Derrick proudly serves as the choir’s advisor, continuing to support students through music and shared purpose. The Trans4mation Gospel Choir will host a showcase on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at Governors State University.
Throughout his academic experience, Derrick was shaped by meaningful relationships with faculty who challenged and supported him. Professors Khalil Marrar and Judith Cunningham, along with Dean Zingsheim, Dr. Goode, and Dr. Vining, played instrumental roles in helping him refine his purpose, communication skills, and student-centered approach. Their mentorship helped guide Derrick toward a career dedicated to higher education and student affairs.
Following graduation, Derrick expanded his professional experience at institutions such as Illinois Institute of Technology and DePaul University, working in student engagement and new student orientation. These roles, combined with his early experiences as a student worker and graduate assistant, strengthened his understanding of collaboration and the interconnected nature of student success. He later returned to Governors State University, bringing with him a broadened perspective and renewed commitment to the institution that shaped him. Looking ahead, Derrick plans to begin his doctoral studies at Governors State University in Fall 2027.
In addition to his administrative role, Derrick serves as an adjunct professor, where he values building authentic relationships with students and fostering thoughtful discussion. He believes in meeting students where they are, encouraging them to explore diverse perspectives, and helping them realize their full potential.
When asked what advice he would offer current students, Derrick encourages them to get involved in what genuinely interests them, build strong relationships with faculty, and seek leadership opportunities early. For him, Governors State University is more than a campus—it is a community where students can grow into confident leaders and change-makers.
“Governors State University is a place where every student can find a community that fosters growth and development into the leaders of tomorrow,” Derrick shared.
