Opportunity, Grit, and Growth: The Story of Brian Motykowski

For Brian Motykowski, education has always been part of his story. Growing up in a family deeply rooted in schools—his father a longtime Chicago Public Schools teacher and his mother an assistant to the athletic director at Richards High School—Brian witnessed the power of hard work and perseverance from an early age. “Despite growing up in that environment, I did not apply myself fully during high school or college,” he admits. “Still, the values my parents modeled—hard work, perseverance, and a strong work ethic—have had a lasting impact on my personal and professional life.”
When Brian arrived at Governors State University, it represented opportunity—not just for him, but for countless others without access to a flagship state university or the traditional college experience. “GSU was a place where grit, determination, and potential mattered more than pedigree,” he reflects. “It gave people like me a chance to rise and to learn. Today, the University still stands for that same promise.”
One of Brian’s fondest memories was Friday night statistics class with Professor David Parmenter, who made a challenging subject not only approachable but enjoyable. That learning experience, combined with his Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, gave Brian the foundation he needed to launch his career. “A degree is a foundation,” he says, “but your mindset, work ethic, and your ability to grow determine how far you will go.”
That philosophy carried Brian far from his beginnings in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. In 2001, he took a leap of faith, moving to Denver with no network and no insurance experience. Nearly 25 years later, he now serves as Vice President – Account Executive at IMA Financial Group, the third-largest insurance brokerage in the country. His day-to-day blends client management, risk advisory, and business development—always rooted in listening and building trust. “Sometimes, not knowing what you’re up against gives you the freedom to take risks, learn fast, and grow without fear,” he reflects.
For Brian, success isn’t about prestige or elite credentials. It’s about resilience, humility, and soft skills like communication and accountability. It’s also about opening doors for others. He hopes to introduce more young people—especially those who may not have family connections—to the insurance industry. “If I can help even a few people discover meaningful careers in an industry that’s often overlooked, then I’ve done something worthwhile.”
Outside of work, Brian finds balance in Colorado’s wide-open landscapes. He and his wife, Rachel, stay busy raising their children, Macy (11) and Grayson (8). An avid cyclist, he often spends weekends road biking or mountain biking through Colorado’s scenic routes. “Cycling keeps me grounded, clears my head, and fuels my energy,” he says.
His advice to current GovState students considering careers in business, insurance, or finance is simple but powerful: “Be open-minded, be curious, and do not overlook the industries that might not have the flashiest reputation. They might be exactly where you thrive.”
