Governors State University helps you earn your degree as you pursue an advanced military role or civilian career. We're here to support veterans, active-duty service members and their family members who are pursuing their education. The majority of our staff is military-connected with a shared desire to continue to serve. The camaraderie you have experienced in the military lives on here at GovState, and we look forward to helping you find purpose forever. 

Applying military connected educational benefits at GovState: 

Federal and State Veterans Benefits are applied each semester using the Veterans Benefit Form via DocuSign. You can get a copy of this form from our email address: veterans@govst.edu. Please complete this form each semester after you have registered for your classes. Please note, Veterans Benefit Forms for upcoming academic terms will be processed once the current term is concluded. 

New Students: 

In addition to submitting the Veterans Benefits Form each semester, the Veterans Resource Center requests that the following documents be submitted prior to your first semester start:

  • A copy of your DD214 (or the DD214 of the person you receive benefits from)
  • A certificate of eligibility for the benefit(s) you will be using at GSU
  • Your 22-1990 or 22-1995 for transfer students (22-5490 or 22-5495 for Dependents)

Student Veteran Attendance or Participation in Courses Pending VA Payment in Compliance with 38 USC 3679(e):

In Compliance with 38 USC 3679(e), Governors State University will not take any of the four following actions toward any student using U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Post 9/11 G.I. Bill® (Ch. 33) or Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (Ch. 31) benefits, while their payment from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs is pending to the educational institution:

  • Prevent their enrollment;
  • Assess a late penalty fee to;
  • Require they secure alternative or additional funding;
  • Deny their access to any resources (access to classes, libraries, or other institutional facilities) available to other students who have satisfied their tuition and fee bills to the institution.

However, to qualify for this provision, such students may be required to:

  • Produce the VA’s Certificate of Eligibility by the first day of class;
  • Provide written request to be certified;
  • Provide additional information needed to properly certify the enrollment
