    Federal Work-Study or Regular Student Employment Jobs

    You may apply for federal work study jobs once you have completed your FAFSA and have been offered a “Federal Work Study Award.” All on-campus student employment jobs are posted on the Jobs for Jaguars site.

    Six easy steps to apply for on-campus employment (federal work study or regular student employment):

    .
      • Log on to Jobs for Jaguars (Handshake) to update your profile and download your resume.
      • On the home page, click on “Jobs" and then filter with "on-campus" to view available student employment opportunities
      • Once you find a position you would like to apply for, follow the instructions for that specific job description and send the required documents to the contact person listed.
      •  The Office of Career Services does not review applications or schedule appointments for open positions.
      • Wait for an interview to be extended from the hiring manager.
      • Upon hire, complete your hiring paperwork. All hiring paperwork must be completed in the Financial Aid Office before starting work.

    You must be logged on to your student portal to access the Jobs for Jaguars site.

    General Eligibility Requirements for Students

    Federal Student Work Study

      • Part-time employment to help educational costs
      • For students enrolled in 6 or more credit hours of eligible coursework.  (Note:  For summer contracts beginning July 1, students must be enrolled in 6 or more credit hours of eligible fall term coursework.)
      • A need based award (FAFSA)

    Program Benefits

      • Students gain valuable work experience
      • Potential to reduce student loan borrowing
      • Potential to reduce family contribution

    Funding

      • Awards are for the entire participation period (academic year or summer)

    Regular Student Employment

    • Part-time employment to help educational costs
    • For students enrolled in 6 or more credit hours of eligible coursework.  (Note:  For summer contracts beginning July 1, students must be enrolled in 6 or more credit hours of eligible fall term coursework.)

    Program Benefits

      • Students gain valuable work experience
      • Potential to assist those not eligible for financial aid
      • Potential to reduce family contribution

     Student Employment Study Guide

    Federal Work Study:
    In order to apply for Federal Work Study jobs on the GSU Campus, you must have completed a FASFA Financial Aid form, designating that you wanted to participate in the Federal Work Study Program. If you are awarded Federal Work Study funds, you will receive an award letter which will be available on the MyGSU Portal. You must provide a copy of your award letter to the hiring manager when you are interviewed.

    Regular Student Employment:
    If you wish to apply for a Regular Student Employment position, visit the GSU Jobs for Jaguars website on the MyGSU Portal. Jobs accepting applications for Regular Student Employment will be listed on the site. When you find a position for which you would like to apply, you must:

    • Complete and send any documents that the contact person on Jobs for Jaguars (Handshake) for that position requires
    • The Hiring Manager will contact you if you are being considered for an interview.

    Graduate Assistantships:
    Governors State University offers a variety of tuition waivers and graduate assistantships.

    These tuition waivers and assistantships are generally awarded based on academic merit. Every GSU college and department awards tuition waivers and assistantships to students studying in their program.

    Graduate Assistantships

    In order to apply for a Graduate Assistantship, you must log into the Jobs for Jaguars Database system, complete an application profile, and search for graduate assistant positions.  

    Please follow these six easy steps to apply for graduate assistantships:

      • Log on to Jobs for Jaguars to update your profile and download your resume.
      • On the home page, Click on “Jobs" and then click on “Internships/Graduate Assistantships” to view available openings.
      • Complete a Graduate Assistant/Tuition Waiver Application for each graduate assistant position of interest.
      • Submit completed application to the hiring manager for each position of interest.
      • Wait for an interview to be extended from the hiring manager.
      • Upon hire, complete your hiring paperwork. All hiring paperwork must be completed and returned to the Office of the Dean before starting work.

    You must be logged on to your student portal to access the Jobs for Jaguars site.  

     In addition to applying for graduate assistantships listed in the Jobs 4 Jaguars portal, also pay attention to the Blackboard course titled “Graduate Student Information Center”, which sends announcements to the graduate student population when GA positions become available. Additionally, some departments hire internally, so keep up to date with your own department on opportunities as they become available.

     Off-Campus Student Employment Jobs

    Off-Campus Student Employment Jobs

    In addition to on-campus employment, there are off-campus listings available where students may apply. These off-campus jobs are posted on the Jobs for Jaguars Database system. You are allowed to upload your resume, cover letter and other documents, search for off-campus full-time and/or part-time employment or off-campus internships through the Jobs for Jaguars website. Students must be logged on to their student portal to utilize the system.

    The Office of Career Services invites off campus employers to attend the annual Job Fair in April of each year. During this fair, Employers and students can meet and discuss potential job opportunities in their field.

     International Students

    International Students

    International students (F and J visas) must be enrolled as a full-time student for the academic year which is considered Fall and Spring semesters (full time is defined as 12 credit hours for Undergraduate students; 9 credit hours for Master’s students; 6 credit hours for Doctoral students). Please visit the Office of International Services (OIS) website for additional information on policies regarding full time enrollment to maintain legal immigration status for F-1 students.

    On Campus Supervisor Information

    PRIOR TO RECRUITING STUDENTS:

    • Verify with your Dean, Chair or Supervisor that you were allocated Federal Work Study funds. If so, how much?

    (Not necessary for Regular Student Employment)

    • Write the job description (title, duties, requirements, etc.); appoint a supervisor or hiring manager who will facilitate the interview/hiring process
