International Education Week

Each year, the U.S. Departments of State & Education sponsor International Education Week (IEW). IEW is a celebration of the importance of international education in the United States.

During IEW, the Office of International Services works with units around the university to host several cultural programming events. If you are interested in being part of this initiative, please email The Office of International Services with how you'd like to be involved.

For IEW 2017, we had a photo contest with two themes. After receiving dozens of creative photos, below were the winners of the contest!

Title -  “Traveling—it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”

Description - Being International Student myself, I was blessed with the opportunity to travel around Europe, Africa, and North America, while embracing with diverse cultures as well as informing other people about my homeland, wonderful Serbia. The picture was made spontaneously by my friend this past summer in front of Adler Planetarium in Chicago. I believe it captures a pure moment that was described by Ibn Battuta, the 14th century, Moroccan scholar who widely traveled the medieval world: “Traveling—it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.”

Title - ‘Not I, nor anyone else, can travel that road for you, you must travel it yourself.’ (This is the highest peak I’ve ever reached! Alps, Austria 4.500 m)

Description - This photo was taken in 2008, January. It was a cold, windy Monday, as I recall. My sister and I went skiing with our father. After a few slides down the highest mountains of Alps in Austria, we decided to take a brake and warm up. Since we were high in the mountain, we did not have many options to choose from. However, just when we thought to give up and go home, I peeked from far away a little tavern with a few chairs standing outside. Ironically, as we set down to drink some hot chocolate, the sun came out, and warmed us up naturally. The only thing I could do then, was to lay-back, drink my hot chocolate, and take selfies!
