We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Governors State University family. We know that the support of family members is vital to student success. Therefore, we invite you to become an engaged member of our community.

Our students' success is a goal shared by all of us. Please consider becoming a part of this important effort. We look forward to creating a productive and rewarding relationship with you.

New Student Programs at Governors State University connects you to people and programs that are here to help you and your student to be successful. Here are just a few of things we have in place for parents and families of students:

  • Parent/Family Orientation

    +

Freshmen students' families and guests are invited to join us for ROAR New Student Orientation. ROAR stands for Resources, Orientation, Advising, and Registration. It is a chance for incoming freshmen and their families to learn more about all of the great resources that GSU offers. Attendance is required for freshmen students because they receive academic advising and register for their courses during ROAR.

ROAR New Student Orientation has a fun and informative schedule of events specifically for family and guests.  Family members and guests will have the opportunity to learn more about GSU and what your student will experience. The exclusive family and guest sessions include:

    • Money Talks (Financial Aid Information): Family Edition
    • Meet the College Deans
    • Community Standards and Campus Safety
    • Mock Class
    • Faculty/Staff Panel
    • ‘Do You Know GSU?’ Game Show
In addition to the aforementioned family sessions, you will be invited to sign up for private meetings with Financial Aid that day to discuss your student’s financial aid package. And, if students bring in their immunization records and final transcripts to orientation, those students and their guests will be entered into a drawing for prizes!

Each orientation is from 8:00am to 5:00pm. Breakfast and lunch are included. Incoming GSU freshmen students - and two guests - may attend at no charge. However, a fee of $35.00 per guest will be charged to the student’s account for additional guests. No cash payment is required or accepted on the day of orientation. Students can register for ROAR online through their myGSU Portal or at www.govst.edu/FreshmanOrientation. The online registration will ask if they are bringing guests.

For any questions regarding orientation, please contact New Student Programs at orientation@govst.edu or 708.235.6819.
