Welcome to the new academic year.

I have always felt lucky that universities have two new beginnings — one shared with all in January when the calendar year changes and another in the fall.  While others view autumn as the prelude to winter, we are launching new beginnings. At Governors State University, we continue the excitement of transformation while we also renew significant traditions.

Governors State University embodies the energy of renewal. The campus is vibrant with students making new friends, faculty creating challenging assignments, and staff members responding to a wide range of questions, from financial aid to career advice.

We enthusiastically welcome new and returning students to GSU.

GSU has much to offer — whether you are a current student or an alum. Explore the giant works of art that make up our renowned Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park. Relax after a long day with a concert in our Center for Performing Arts. Check out the schedule for Friends and Family Weekend. Register for Carts & Cocktails. Join a student club — or start your own. Attend diverse lectures and seminars. Consider Study Abroad.

Amid all this bustling energy, I'd like to offer a few tips for a successful semester.

Enroll in a full class load (15 credit hours). Taking "Fifteen to Finish" keeps you on track for graduation. Get involved with campus life. Audition for a play. Join an intramural team. Participate in Student Senate. Interview for an on-campus job. Bring your friends and family to cheer the GSU Jaguars.

Everyone, not just those enrolled in degree programs, can explore learning opportunities at GSU. Review our regular course offerings or take a look at our extended learning classes..

Whatever your educational path, please make Governors State University your second home. We're excited to welcome you as a member of our extended family.
