Smart Start: August 12 - August 23


Smart Start is a highly individualized program with personal attention of faculty and peer mentors in an intensive and nurturing environment that begins two weeks ahead of the fall semester. Smart Start students have an excellent opportunity to strengthen their academic skills, develop a peer support network and to familiarize themselves with GSU and its resources. About Smart Start Lunch, Learn and Connect:

Community focused lunches, hosted by offices or cluster of offices, will be provided to all Smart Start students from Monday, August 12 through Friday, August 26. To attend, a free admission ticket will be required. Students can pick up their ticket at their 11am, Peer Mentor session preceding lunch. Yoga and Walking Meditation
5:30pm, Hosted by Serendipity Yoga and Wellness and Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park
Join in for an opportunity to merge yoga, meditation and creative expression. Begin with a 45-minute yoga class designed for individuals with all-levels of yoga experience. Following class, you will be led through a walking meditation in the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park. Participants will stop at each piece of art for a guided meditation designed to inspire creativity, peace and artistic expression. Be sure to dress comfortably to move and walk.

Service and Leadership Seminar: August 19 - 23

The Service and Leadership Seminar is a week long service-learning opportunity for incoming freshmen and new transfer students at Governors State University.  The seminar will be held prior to the start of the 2019 fall semester, August 19 through the 23rd. Students will be provided an opportunity to learn about community service, leadership, and self-awareness.  The seminar encompasses community service projects, workshops, speakers, and interaction with current campus leaders.  Students are immersed in an array of activities that enables participants to discover how they can help create positive, sustainable change on Governors State University’s campus.
