Dr. Katherine Atkins Wix is an Assistant Professor, School Counseling Track leader, and the Interim MA Counseling Program Coordinator at Governors State University. Dr. Atkins Wix graduated with her M.S.Ed from Northern Illinois University in School Counseling in 2005 and her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision in 2015. In 2016, Dr. Atkins Wix was named the Toni R. Tollerud School Counselor Educator of the Year. Dr. Atkins Wix served as the Illinois Counselor Educator and Supervisor Secretary for 2015-2017, and is currently serving as the secretary for the North Central Association for Counselor Educators and Supervisors (NCACES), sits on the board of directors for the Military and Government Counseling Association (MGCA), and is the Counselor Educator liaison for the Illinois School Counseling Association. Dr. Atkins Wix is passionate about introducing school counselors-in-training to leadership and advocacy efforts as well as military advocacy and increased competency when working with military families in educational settings. Currently, she is serving on the taskforce to create clinical and training competencies when counseling military populations. Dr. Atkins Wix is currently researching studies to examine competency among counselors-in-training at Governors State University. She is also an active presenter at state, regional, and national conferences. Her passion for educating and preparing school counselors is matched by her desire to create an equitable learning environment for all students through data driven interventions.
Dr. Atkins Wix has helped write several grants that were awarded to Governors State University since joining the faculty in 2015. Currently, Dr. Atkins Wix is the PI for the WE Project: Training school counselors to advocate for LGBTQ students, which was funded by the Robert J. Nejedlo Social Emphasis Grant: Schultz Foundation for Advancing Counseling. Dr. Atkins Wix also co-authored the FY 17 Behavioral Workforce Education and Training Grant for Paraprofessionals and Professionals. Dr. Atkins Wix has published two articles in the Journal of Military and Government Counseling on the importance of supporting military spouses graduate and the need for counselor competencies. She is also in the revision state of an article focusing on a training model for school counselors. Dr. Atkins Wix has presented at numerous national, regional, and state conferences. Since joining Governors State University she has presented on international counseling, the need for military competencies, student leadership, research on exit interviews, how to secure a faculty position post doc school, working with students with autism spectrum disorder, and the incorporation of data driven interventions.
