Governors State University Foundation and Alumni Association scholarship funding recognizes academic excellence and is awarded to deserving students in their pursuit of a GSU degree.

Scholarship offerings for any given year are determined from a large list of scholarships, each of which has its own criteria and funding level. In addition, the number and scale of scholarships vary from year to year, based on available funds.

Please review eligibility, criteria, and deadlines for scholarships carefully. Students are responsible for submitting required documentation, including an application form (see Guidelines and Application below) for each scholarship, on time and in a professional manner. Be sure to FOLLOW DIRECTIONS.

    GSU Foundation Scholarship Instructions and Guidelines

    Important Scholarship Information:

    • Financial need scholarships require that a FASFA be on file at the time of application
    • Scholarships are applied to tuition, fees and on-campus housing, unless otherwise stated in the criteria, up to the maximum award. Unused funds will continue to be applied to the student's account for subsequent semesters during the same academic year, provided student continues to meet the minimum eligibility requirements.
    • A student is allowed to receive a tuition waiver and a scholarship up to but not to exceed the cost of tuition and fees.  Unused funds may be applied to subsequent semesters as outlined in the paragraph above.
    • Tuition payments - If you have not received official notification about your scholarship status by the tuition due date, you need to sign a tuition payment plan agreement and make the required payment. If you are awarded a scholarship after you've made a payment, your overpayment, if any, will be refunded to you if your scholarship award exceeds your balance due.
    • Scholarship funds will be posted to the student account after the final drop deadline.
    • Scholarships are rescinded if the student falls below the minimum number of hours required.
    • Employees of the university are not eligible.

    Award:             One at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Graduate level programs, degree seeking student
    • Minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • Financial need is not a criterion

    Alumni Association Scholarship Honoring Rosemary Hulett

    Award:             One at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Degree seeking in good academic standing at GSU
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • Minimum current cumulative GPA of 3.75
    • Must have financial need (FAFSA required)

    Ronald Bean Community Service Scholarship

    Award:             One at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Degree seeking in good academic standing at GSU
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • Demonstrate engagement in community volunteer services
    • United States citizen.

      Documentation Required:

    • Biographical essay (500 to 1,000 words) demonstrating a history of and desire to continue volunteering in the community.    
    • Two letters of recommendation from a volunteer organization. 

    Dr. Lowell W. Culver Fellowship in Public Administration

    Award:                         Two at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Must be a graduate student in Public Administration
    • Minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA
    • Enrolled (or enrolling) in minimum of 6 credit hours

    Documentation Required:

    • Biographical essay (500 words) addressing how an MPA from GSU will be a benefit to a career in the public sector. Finalists must show promise in their selected career.

    Lorraine Fontana Endowed Memorial Scholarship

    Award:               Two at $1,000                     
    Eligibility:

    • Degree seeking student in the College of Business or College of Arts and Science
    • Majoring in Management Information Systems, Accounting, Finance, Computer Science or Information Technology
    • Minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA, in good academic standing
    • Must be enrolled (or enrolling)in a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • United States Citizen

    Documentation Required: 

    • Essay (500 words) describing your career goals and how this award will impact your education.

    Dr. Katherine Gavin Scholarship

    Award:                         One at $500

    Eligibility: 

    • Undergraduate or graduate degree seeking student  majoring in the field of Science or Health
    • Minimum 3.0 (undergraduate) or 3.25 (graduate) cumulative GPA in good academic standing
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • United States citizen
    • Must demonstrate financial need. 

    Documentation Required: 

    • Essay (300 to 600 words) outlining your commitment to a career in the field of science or health and give rationale for selecting the career.  Include any volunteer community service(s) performed
    • Two letters of recommendation from non-family member.

    The Dr. Lowell Goldberg Health or Community Service Endowed Award

    Award:                         One at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Graduate or undergraduate student
    • Minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • Must be recommended by a GSU faculty member, division chair or dean based on scholarship and leadership qualities, interest in GSU, and commitment to health service or community service, preferably in the southern suburbs.

    Documentation Required:

    • Essay (500 to 1000 words) including your biographical information, service activities and career goals.
    • Letter of recommendation from the faculty, division chair, or dean.

    Donald W. Hansen Memorial Endowed Scholarship

      Award:                         Two at $1,200

    Eligibility:

    • Undergraduate or graduate student
    • Minimum 3.8 cumulative GPA
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • Minimum 15 hours of graded work at GSU within the two previous years.

    Documentation Required:

    • Essay (500 words) describing your academic excellence and leadership abilities.
    • Letters of recommendation which attest to your academic excellence, leadership, and community service. 

    Stephen R. Hyzny, Sr. Memorial Scholarship

    Award:                         One at $750

    Eligibility:

    • Preference female student
    • Minimum 2.0 GPA
    • Degree seeking student in Information Technology
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • United States Citizen

    Jassac Charitable Foundation Scholarship Honoring Lorine S. Samuels

    Award:                        Two at $350 (Follett Gift Card)

    Eligibility:

    • Must be an undergraduate degree seeking student
    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75 from GSU or most recent school
    • Must be enrolled (or enrolling) in a minimum of six credit hours
    • African American student preferred

    Chuck Klaas Memorial Scholarship

    Award:                         One at $1,000

    Eligibility:

    • Degree-seeking student majoring in Communications/Digital Learning/Media Design
    • Minimum 2.0 GPA and be in good academic standing
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • Must be a United States Citizen 

    Documentation Required:  

    • Essay (500 words) including any information about yourself, your academic/professional/personal goals, financial need, and any other information you deem pertinent

    Matteson Rotary Club

    Award:                         One at $500

    Eligibility: 

    • Must be a degree seeking student at Governors State University;
    • Must be enrolled (or enrolling) in a minimum of 6 credit hours;
    • Must have financial need as evidenced by the current FASFA;
    • Preference given to student who either 1) live in the service area of Richton Park, Olympia Fields, and Matteson; or 2) have graduated from Rich Central High School, Rich South High School, or the South Suburban College Prep High School, all in Rich Township, Illinois;
    • Preference given to students who either have demonstrated community service in our out of school, or who have had employment restricting time available for community service. 

    Documentation Required: 

    • Biographical essay (250 to 500 words) describing career goals and how this award will impact your education, and including areas of preference as shown above, if applicable.

    Manilow Scholarship for Students Who Achieve Intellectual Excellence

    Award:                         One at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 in any field
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • Demonstrate academic excellence and determination to complete their degree.
    • United States Citizen and resident of Illinois
    • Financial may be considered

    Documentation Required:

    • Essay (500 to 1000 words) describing your candidacy and career goals and how your degree will benefit your career. Include a brief bio describing your educational and employment history and accomplishments as they relate to career goals.
    • Letter of recommendation from a GSU faculty member or administrator may be submitted.

    Master of Public Administration Scholarship

    Award:                         One at $500  

    Eligibility:

    • Degree seeking student enrolled in the MPA program at GSU. 
    • Good academic standing with a minimum 3.70 cumulative GPA
    • Enrolled (or enrolling) in minimum of 6 credit hours
    • Have at least 21 hours of earned credit in the MPA Program at GSU

    Documentation Required:

    • Essay (1 or two pages) describing how he/she expects to benefit from a Master’s in Public Administration degree.

    Mathematics Student Teaching Scholarship

      Documentation Required: 

    Award:                         One at $1,000

    Eligibility:

    • Degree seeking or Mathematics Certificate student. 
    • Enrolled in EDUC 4999 course or be approved for Student Teaching
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 12 credit hours
    • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA of 3.0
    • United States citizen.

    Documentation Required: 

    • Submit a copy of your essay (two pages – 1” margins) that was submitted for admission into the student teaching program that describes your Philosophy of Education, Mathematics Education. This paper reflects your beliefs about teaching and learning as developed during your coursework and during the student teaching experience. Your essay will be reviewed from the aspects of GSU Professional Education Unit’s conceptual framework addressing areas of knowledge, skills, and dispositions included in your paper. Your beliefs about mathematics teaching will also be reviewed.

    Respond to Violence

    Award:                         One at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Have been impacted by violence or are working in the community to address issued relating to violence
    • Degree seeking student at GSU
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in at least 6 credit hours
    • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA 

    Documentation Required:

    • Essay (300 -500 words) describing why you should be selected, your future plans to work toward violence prevention, and how the scholarship will help in your educational pursuits.

    Rich Township Community Scholarships

    Award:                         Five at $500

    Eligibility:   

    • Must live or work in Rich Township, Illinois
    • 22 years of age or older
    • Graduate or undergraduate degree seeking student at GSU
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in at least 6 credit hours
    • Rich Township officials or employees, or family members of officials or employees are not eligible
    • Preference is given to applicants in active military service, serve in the Reserves or National Guard, are veterans (or spouse of veteran), and need short term assistance.

    Documentation Required: 

    • Essay (300 to 500 words) outlining career goals.  Essay should include a description of how you fit into one or more of the preferences above, if applicable.  

    Second Chance Scholarship

     Award:          One at $500

     

    Eligibility:

    • Must be an individual returning to society after a period of incarceration
    • Degree seeking student enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours
    • Must be in good academic standing
    • Financial need as evidenced by the FAFSA 

    Documentation Required:

    Essay (300 -500 words) on how this scholarship will affect your career aspirations and how it will assist with your financial need.

    Dual Degree Male Success Initiative

    Award:                         One at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Must be a current Dual Degree Program student
    • Must be part of the Male Success Initiative program
    • Minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA
    • Dreamers are eligible to apply
    • Scholarship is applied first to outstanding tuition and fees.  Any award over that amount will be applied to the GSU MyOneCard.

    Documentation Required:

    • Essay (500 words) describing your academic/professional experience and goals, and how receiving this scholarship will help you achieve those goals.  Mention of your community service, extracurricular activities, and leadership skills is highly encouraged.

    Faculty Senate Student Scholarship

    Award:                         Two at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Must be degree seeking student at GSU
    • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA undergraduate; minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA graduate
    • Must be a degree seeking student in good academic standing at GSU
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours; 3 credit hours minimum graduate level
    • Financial need is NOT a criterion.

    Jackie McKethen Scholarship for LGBTQIA Students

    Award:                         One at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Must be a degree seeking student at GSU; and
    • Must be a member of the LGBTQIA community, or;
    • Must have shown significant Assistance and acceptability toward the community (as evidenced with two letters of reference attesting to participation) or have the recommendation of a member of the LGBTQIA Student Group.
    • GPA will be considered if needed to choose between equally qualified applicants.

    American Logistics Association Endowed Scholarship

    Award:                                 One at $1,000

    Eligibility:

    • Undergraduate and graduate College of Business students in pursuit of a career in logistics, marketing, business management, or accounting; or IDSS/SIDL students with a minor in business, marketing, accounting or communications.
    • Must be a veteran or active in the military or a federal civil service employee, or be a dependent of a veteran with an honorable discharge or a dependent of a federal civil service employee.
    • Must also be a member of a household within a 50-mile radius of Chicago.

    Documentation Required:

    • Essay (500 words) covering observance of restrictions, experience in logistics, business management or accounting, and academic/career aspirations in logistics/supply chain/distribution related field.

    Donald Dolan Endowed Business Scholarship

    Award:                         One at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Undergraduate or graduate
    • COB students seeking a degree in business administration.
    • Enrolled (or enrolling) in minimum of 6 credit hours
    • Good academic standing at GSU or prior school
    • Financial need is a criterion
    • United States citizen and resident of Illinois

    Award:                         Two at $1,000

     Eligibility:

    • Students must express an interest in a career involving an entrepreneurial role in business or industry with a preference to be given to students interested in pursuing a career in retail business.
    • Undergraduate or graduate degree seeking student in good academic standing at GSU
    • Must be enrolled (or enrolling)in a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • US Citizen and Illinois resident 

    Documentation Required:

    • Biographical essay (500 to 1000 words) describing education and work experience, career goals, and how you plan to make a difference in the world. 
    • Letter of recommendation from a counselor, administrator, dean, division chair, or a faculty member testifying to commitment and capability for entrepreneurship is required.

    The Wilbur L. Morrison Endowed Scholarship

    Award:                         One at $1,000

    Eligibility:

    • Course of study must be leading to a business degree.
    • Undergraduate or graduate degree seeking student
    • Must be enrolled (or enrolling)in a minimum of 6 credit hours
    • US Citizen and Illinois resident

    Documentation Required:

    • Biographical essay (500 to 1000 words) indicating education and work experience, along with reasons to be considered for the award.
    • Letter of reference from dean, division chair or faculty member detailing student’s commitment to and/or experience in retailing. 

    Rich Township Community Scholarships 

    Award:                         Five at $500

    Eligibility: 

    • Must live or work in Rich Township, Illinois
    • 22 years of age or older
    • Graduate or undergraduate degree seeking student at GSU
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in at least 6 credit hours
    • Rich Township officials or employees, or family members of officials or employees are not eligible

    Award:                       One at $1,000     

    Eligibility:

    • Enrolled in School Counseling Program
    • Must have candidacy, or completing candidacy, during the term of application
    • Minimum 3.3 cumulative GPA
    • Must be enrolled (or enrolling) in a minimum of 9 credit hours (If enrolled in less than nine credit hours (but a minimum of six hours) the award may be prorated and applied to the next term until fully expended.

    Rich Township Community Scholarships

    Award:                         Five at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Must live or work in Rich Township, Illinois
    • 22 years of age or older
    • Graduate or undergraduate degree seeking student at GSU
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in at least 6 credit hours
    • Rich Township officials or employees, or family members of officials or employees are not eligible
    • Preference is given to applicants in active military service, serve in the Reserves or National Guard, are veterans (or spouse of veteran), and need short term assistance.

    Rich Township Community Scholarships

    Award:                         Five at $500

    Eligibility:

    •  Must live or work in Rich Township, Illinois
    • 22 years of age or older
    • Graduate or undergraduate degree seeking student at GSU
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in at least 6 credit hours
    • Rich Township officials or employees, or family members of officials or employees are not eligible.
    • Preferenceis given to applicants in active military service, serve in the Reserves or National Guard, are veterans (or spouse of veteran), and need short term assistance.    

    Documentation Required:

    • Essay (300 -500 words) outlining their career goals.  Essay should include a description on how you fit into one or more of the above preferences, if applicable.

    Second Chance Scholarship

    Award:          One at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Must be an individual returning to society after a period of incarceration
    • Degree seeking student enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours
    • Must be in good academic standing
    • Financial need as evidenced by the FAFSA 

    Documentation Required:

    Essay (300 -500 words) on how this scholarship will affect your career aspirations and how it will assist with your financial need.

    Melissa Kay Solomon Scholarship for Addiction Studies

    Award:                         Four at $1,000

    Eligibility: 

    • Graduate level degree seeking student in Addictions Studies;
    • Minimum current cumulative GPA of 3.5 (at GSU or former college/university);
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of six credit hours;
    • Financial need is a criterion (a FAFSA form is required)

    Documentation Required:

    • Essay (500 words) discussing the reasons you chose a career in Addiction Studies and your career goals.

     

    Dual Degree Male Success Initiative

    Award:                         One at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Must be a current Dual Degree Program student
    • Must be part of the Male Success Initiative program
    • Minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA
    • Dreamers are eligible to apply
    • Scholarship is applied first to outstanding tuition and fees.  Any award over that amount will be applied to the GSU MyOneCard.

    Documentation Required:

    • Essay (500 words) describing your academic/professional experience and goals, and how receiving this scholarship will help you achieve those goals.  Mention of your community service, extracurricular activities, and leadership skills is highly encouraged.

    Faculty Senate Student Scholarship

    Award:                         Two at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Must be degree seeking student at GSU
    • Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA undergraduate; minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA graduate
    • Must be a degree seeking student in good academic standing at GSU
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours; 3 credit hours minimum graduate level
    • Financial need is NOT a criterion.

    Documentation Required:

    • Essay (500 words) outlining how your intend to use your GSU degree.
    • Letter of recommendation from non-relative answering how they know applicate and why applicant is deserving.

    $100 Follett- GSU Textbook Voucher

    Award:                         Thirty at $100 (Follett Gift Card)

    Eligibility:

    • Minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA undergraduate; 3.5 cumulative GPA graduate level
    • Enrolled (or about to enroll) in a minimum of 6 credit hours

    Documentation Required:

    • Essay (300 words) outlining how you intend to use your GSU degree.

    Jackie McKethen Scholarship for LGBTQIA Students

    Award:                         One at $500

    Eligibility:

    • Must be a degree seeking student at GSU; and
    • Must be a member of the LGBTQIA community, or;
    • Must have shown significant Assistance and acceptability toward the community (as evidenced with two letters of reference attesting to participation) or have the recommendation of a member of the LGBTQIA Student Group.
    • GPA will be considered if needed to choose between equally qualified applicants.

    • Essay (500 words) showing commitment to the LGBTQIA community.
