Civic engagement is a core value at our institution; as such, promoting civic engagement is an institution-wide effort. Under the sponsorship of the Office of the Provost, a campus-wide Coordinating Council that includes stakeholders in student affairs, academic affairs, and collaborations with community partners is charged with infusing civic engagement in every corner of Governors State University. The Coordinating Committee meets regularly and includes leadership from the Center for Civic Engagement and Community Service, the Consortium for Civic Engagement, and the Faculty Scholarship and Teaching Center.
Civic Engagement and Community Service Center
The Center for Civic Engagement and Community Service is located in the A building, room 2130 and is designed to be a one-stop-shop for students, faculty and community members focusing on social justice and civic responsibility. Students interested in service opportunities, faculty interested in incorporating service and civic engagement activities in their classes, and community partners interested in recruiting volunteers, will be able to bridge resources through this office. Consortium for Civic Engagement
The Consortium for Civic Engagement is chaired by Dr. Aurélio Manuel Valente, Vice President for Student Affairs, and is designed to engage community partners in meaningful dialogue and develop programs and initiatives which are reciprocal and mutually beneficial to both the campus and community.
