Dear GSU Community,
I look forward to the beginning of our first year together as we navigate the unusual times that dominate our current realities and the landscape of higher education. On July 1, instead of walking the halls, meeting with faculty, staff and students, and spending time in the local community, I immediately began the process of supporting the finalization of our operational plans for the fall semester. I have been impressed with the hard work, flexibility, and dedication shown by the faculty and staff as we worked through the many details of providing a safe fall semester.
Attached is the Fall 2020 Operating Plan. This comprehensive plan took the time, effort and collaboration of many groups and individuals across campus and was created with the safety and wellbeing of the entire community in mind, using guidance and instruction from the State of Illinois, the Illinois Board of Higher Education and the Centers for Disease Control. Our primary focus will always be how we keep Governors State University safe. While the entire community is invested in the model outlined here, the plan is fluid and may change as the coronavirus pandemic persists.
This plan allows education to be delivered in a variety of remote and face-to-face formats while we continue providing our students with a quality education. In addition to academic guidelines, the plan addresses health and safety measures, arts and athletic events, advising, campus operations, travel, life in Prairie Place and more.
Human Resources will be conducting Zoom meetings in the near future to answer any questions you may have about the Fall 2020 Working Protocols and Guidelines, contained in Appendix 2 of the Operating Plan. Watch your GSU email for more information. Additionally, the Agora will provide monthly updates on the plan and any urgent updates will be sent via eblast.
During the next few weeks, I look forward to creating opportunities to meet and talk with you, even as we follow the Operating Plan regarding social distancing. Delivering instruction in this new reality has its challenges, but it also has been very rewarding to see members of the Governors State community form stronger alliances as we fight through this adversity. It’s what we do, and it makes me so proud to serve alongside you, witnessing Jaguars on the move!
Classes will begin as regularly scheduled on Monday, August 31!
