Governors State University Library to Host Important Exhibit
University Park, January 4, 2007 – The Governors State University Library has been selected as one of 60 libraries across the nation and only one of two in Illinois to host “Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians.” This unique and important exhibit and the related public programs celebrate the work of America’s women physicians. The exhibit runs from April 25 through June 6, 2007.
“The exhibit is sponsored by the National Library of Medicine and the American Library Association,” explained Paul Blobaum, co-coordinator of the event at Governors State University. “It honors the lives and achievements of women in American medicine by exploring the themes of accessing medical education, challenging barriers, caring for vulnerable communities, advancing research, and transforming the way medicine is practiced.”
In addition to the exhibit, the University Library is coordinating programs developed and presented by individuals, professional associations, educational institutions, and community organizations which both compliment and enhance the themes explored by the exhibit.
“We are looking for program proposals which celebrate women physicians, connect individuals with library health information resources, and inspire young people, especially women and minorities, to enter the health professions,” said Blobaum. “We are hoping to hear from anyone interested in the exhibit. We would like to include a variety of programs geared toward the various ages and interests, from school children to professionals to seniors.”
According to Blobaum, program proposals can include book discussions, film presentations, lectures, receptions, performances, and workshops. They may be held during the day, in the evening, or on weekends, and, like the exhibit, will be free and open to the public.
“We are open to a variety of activities which explore the exhibit’s themes. We hope to create many opportunities throughout the exhibit that foster learning and discussion.”
Programs related to the GSU exhibit may take place prior to the exhibit’s arrival on campus or during the exhibit period. Program proposals should be submitted for consideration by January 26, 2007. Submissions can be made via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or web form at www.govst.edu/library/exhibits.
