Ronald Brubaker Memorial Fund for Computer Science Program Laboratory Support
A Memorial Fund has been established to honor the memory of Ronald Brubaker. Ron joined the Governors State University faculty early in its history. He was a person of many interests and talents. During his years at GSU, he filled many different roles—environmental science professor, division chair, dean, computer science professor and program director, network administrator, but most importantly, friend and colleague.
Ron's intellectual curiosity fit well with GSU's commitment to be interdisciplinary in its approach. He was an exemplary collaborator across disciplines and enjoyed the challenge of learning new things. For example, he partnered with University Professor Paul Schranz to develop an application of Ansel Adams' Zone System tying Adam's system to a specific paper contrast. When the personal computer was in its infancy, Ron decided to learn to program. Trying something new kept him interested. As he developed his expertise, he found programming projects that benefited the University. Among other projects, he developed software for the GSU library. Together with Professor Skip Roberts, Ron wrote the proposal for an innovative computer science program based on use of the personal computer.
Grounding computer science theory in practice was important to Ron. The Ronald Brubaker Memorial Fund commemorates Ron's contributions to computer innovation in both hardware and software. Ron developed and maintained the equipment for the program. He developed a computer network for the science division, administered it and bragged on its unfailing performance. Ron attended to the practical necessities of the computer science program, and the faculty and students benefited.
Purpose
The Memorial Fund exists to provide support for:
- technological innovation utilizing computers;
- start-up projects requiring funds to purchase new software and hardware;
- opportunities for hands-on experience with new technologies.
