Emergency Closing Information

If Governors State University (GSU) must close due to inclement weather or any other reason, the following procedures have been developed.

In the event of a closing, an announcement will be posted on GSU's home page.

Emergency Closing Center

  • The university will contact the Emergency Closing Center. Closing information will be received by most major radio and television stations including:
    • WGN Radio 720 AM
    • WBBM Radio 780 AM
    • WKAN Radio 1320 AM (Kankakee)
    • WYKT Radio 105.5 FM (Kankakee)
    • CBS Channel 2
    • NBC Channel 5
    • ABC Channel 7
    • WGN Channel 9
    • WFLD FOX Channel 32 
    • CLTV Cable

  • You may access the Emergency Closing Center's information:
    • Go to www.emergencyclosings.com, and search for Governors State University, University Park, or
    • Call 847.238.1234, and enter GSU's main telephone number, 708.534.5000, using a touchtone phone.

University Hotline

  • Call GSU's Hotline, 708.534.4909, to hear a recorded message informing you of a closing or late opening. Because it's possible many calls will be received at the same time, you may experience a busy signal. If so, hang up and try calling again.

How will you know if GSU will be open or closed the following day?

  • Visit the Emergency Closing Center website at www.emergencyclosings.com, or call the center at 847.238.1234. Enter GSU' main telephone number, 708.534.5000.
  • Dial into GSU's Hotline, 708.534.4909, and listen for a recorded message.
  • In the absence of a specific announcement to the contrary, it should be understood that classes and other functions will continue as scheduled.

If there is a closing or late opening message, what do you do next? (STAFF)

  • Dial into your voice-mailbox and place a closing greeting (informing callers of our closing).
    • Dial 708.534.4990
    • When your recording begins, press "*" (asterisk key).
    • Enter your ID (four-digit mailbox number), and then press "#".
    • Enter your password, and then press "#" (pound or hash key).
    • Press "411".
    • Listen to your current greeting.
    • Press "1" to re-record.
    • Press "#" to end recording.
