Television courses present the course content on a series of videotapes with a coordinating faculty member. Videotapes are available from a variety of sources and instructors use both voice-mail and electronic-mail to communicate with students. Certain courses are available on some local Comcast broadcast channels. If you are taking a television, correspondence or online course, please visit our class support page for links to syllabi, orientations, instructor and assignment information.

Many television courses have an orientation session at GSU and/or an online orientation to provide an opportunity for students to become familiar with their instructor(s), review course requirements, assignments and examinations. During the first two weeks of each trimester, orientations are held at GSU to provide an opportunity for students to meet their instructor, discuss course requirements, assignments and examinations. Students can usually choose either a weekday evening or a Saturday morning session. Television course orientations are mandatory for students within a 50-mile radius of GSU.
Students residing more than 50 miles from GSU and out-of-state students should obtain and carefully review course material available from Follett's GSU Bookstore, for course information.
Note: Some courses are designated in the University Schedule of Classes as NOT available for distance students to denote required attendance or a lack of available material for distance students. These classes require attendance at all orientations, meetings and exams. For further assistance call 708-534-4099, 1-800-478-8478 ext. 4099 or via e-mail.
All study guides and textbooks, as well as the videotapes for a selected number of television courses, may be purchased from or ordered by phone from Folletts GSU Bookstore: 708-534-4558, or 1-877-525-6578.
Many courses can be viewed on local cable (The Educator) and some are available at area libraries. Students taking courses at a distance may acquire course videotapes from Follett's GSU Bookstore or ACT Media. Please review the Television Course Viewing Chart for details. Note: You must have Adobe Acrobat version 4 or greater installed to view the file.
The University Library maintains at least five sets of videotapes for all of the television courses. Usually, two sets are on two-hour reserve for in-house viewing only and three sets are available for one (1) week maximum per tape checkout for home viewing. All tapes are VHS format. Fines for overdue tapes are charge at the rate of $5.00 per day, per item, and all borrowing privileges are suspended until the item is returned. If a tape is damaged or lost, the University Library imposes a $35 ($25 replacement fee plus $10 processing fee per tape) charge to cover the cost of replacing the tape. A valid identification card must be presented to check out a tape. Student identification cards are issued and updated in the Office of Student Life (A1120).
