Computer Settings

IT Help Desk is responsible for:   contact help desk at 708-534-HELP (4357) 

  • Governors State Help Desk provides first level support for Data/Phone Communications and all computing concerns including, Software/hardware support for both PCs and MACs 
  • Blackboard login credentials, MyGSU portal and email issues 

Center for Online Teaching and Learning (COTL) is responsible for:  contact COTL at 708-534-4115 or Submit the Blackboard Support Form  

  • Assisting students having difficulties viewing Blackboard course content, accessing Blackboard Collaborate or Blackboard IM, and experiencing error messages when submitting exams and quizzes online. Please contact blackboard@govst.edu; a Blackboard Support Team member will respond to your request/question within 1-2 business days
     
  • Include the following information in your email for a quick and accurate response:
    Your full name and ID
    The nature of your problem - What are you trying to do?
    An exact copy of any error messages you receive
    Any other pertinent information
     

For Browser issues, follow the following three steps before you contact us.

Step 1.

Check to see if your web browser is compatible. 

How to identify Your Browser: 

  1. Open your web browser
  2. locate the web browser Help button (the help button is located near the address window) 
  3. lhelp or rhelp 

  4. click on the About option at the bottom of the menu.

A general informational window will open displaying the "Browser name and Version" with some addition information. Write down the browser name and version then compare the information to the Compatible Web Browser list below. If your web browser doesn't match one of browsers listed below then you will need to download and install a compatible or certified browser on your computer.

Step 2.

 
Your online course requires you to have a current version of "Java" installed on your computer, in order for your course, to function properly.

Download and install the latest version of Java software
from
"http://www.java.com" 

 

Step 3.


Many course components use pop-up windows to display information or provide access to course tools. You must Enable Browser and Toolbar pop-up blockers to access course tools on the GSU Blackboard website.

a) Internet Explorer 

  1. The first time you access a course pop-up item. Internet Explorer will block the pop-up and display a yellow bar at the top of the browser window.
  2. Click the yellow bar and menu window will open.
  3. Click, "Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site" on the menu window this will automatically configure your browser to allow Blackboard pop-ups from this point on.

Steps to manually configure Internet Explorer to allow pop-ups for a specific website 

  1. Click to open Internet Explorer.
  2. Click the Tools button, point to Pop-up Blocker, and then click Pop-up Blocker Settings.
  3. In the Address of website to allow box, type the address (or URL) of the website you want to see pop-ups from, and then click Add.

 

b) Firefox 

  1. The first time you access a course pop-up item. Firefox will block the pop-up and display a yellow bar at the top of the browser window.
  2. Click the Options Button on the far right end of the yellow bar.
  3. Click Allow Pop-ups on the open menu window.

c) Toolbars

There are too many toolbars available from other vendors. A tip is to look under the settings or preference option on the toolbar to allow pop-ups for your course.
