The program prepares teachers to successfully undertake the role of reading specialist or clinician and to deliver staff development within schools which are serving an expanding multicultural student population.

Knowledge areas and competencies incorporated into the program's required course work were identified by the Professional Standards and Ethics Committee and the Advisory Group to the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education Joint Task Force of the International Reading Association.

Certification of Endorsement

Graduates of this program are eligible for a teaching certificate or certificate endorsement from the Illinois State Board of Education when they meet additional requirements described in the Teacher Education and Certification section in the Governors State University catalog. Students seeking the Initial Elementary, Initial Secondary, or Initial Standard Certificate endorsed in reading or an endorsement in reading on an existing certificate must pass the appropriate examinations administered by the Illinois State Board of Education. Students who have two years teaching experience and complete both the degree and the requirements for the supervisory endorsement listed below will be granted a supervisory endorsement if they hold a special certificate.

To be recommended for certification, the student must present evidence of having passed the basic skills and subject matter knowledge examinations required by the Illinois State Board of Education to issue a certificate endorsed for teaching in the area of Reading.
