Psychology Programs: Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Educational Specialist

Mission

It is the mission of the psychology programs at GSU to promote the use of evidence-based practices within the discipline of psychology as a foundation for our efforts to ensure that our graduates are able to ethically apply their knowledge and skills while compassionately serving the diverse populations they will encounter over the course of their careers, including but not limited to teaching, providing mental health services, or engaging in research. In emphasizing evidence-based practices, the psychology faculty are committed to integrating the best available research with assessment, clinical and school psychology practice, and experimentation in psychology. In emphasizing ethics and compassion, the psychology faculty are committed to instilling in our students an approach to their work which demonstrates empathy and care and a spirit of inclusiveness.

Core Values

A high quality, empirically-based education in the discipline of psychology should be available to those typically underserved by higher education and to residents of our surrounding communities.  We believe that such an education should be based on the evidence-based outcomes and quality principles identified by the American Psychological Association as components of the best education in psychology.

We are committed to preparing graduates that will help the communities in which they live and work grow and flourish.

We are committed to preparing graduates who, because of their solid scientific background in psychology, can adapt their knowledge and skills to thrive in a global economy.

We embrace diversity among students, staff, and faculty as well as members of the broader community, and we encourage acceptance of wide-ranging perspectives, and work to reconcile conflicts that arise in the community from a position of inclusiveness and mutual respect.

We value the compassionate application of knowledge and skills, whether in academic settings in which teaching and research are conducted or clinical settings in which clients are served.
