Admission & New Student Information

Admission to the Program

We're pleased that you have chosen GSU as the place to continue your education and that your application to Governors State University has been approved. If you have already received your admission letter, then you have been admitted to the university with undergraduate degree-seeking status. In this status you will be able to enroll in courses during the upcoming trimester.

As a new student at Governors State University, it is important that you work closely with your advisor to plan your schedule to ensure your best opportunities for academic success.  In order to arrange an appointment with your advisor, Rosetta Gibson, please contact her by sending an e-mail message to r-gibson@govst.edu or by calling (708) 534-7897.  You should bring a copy of your transcripts showing all of your college coursework so that a Study Plan can be completed during your appointment.

After meeting the university admission requirements, you must meet the complete set of admission requirements as articulated in the Governors State University Catalog in order to continue in the Elementary Education program.

Full admission to the Elementary Education program will require that you complete additional requirements.  These requirements include:

  • attending a program orientation,
  • passing the Basic Skills Test of the Illinois Certification Testing System, and
  • completing four introductory courses:
    • EDUC310  Foundations of Education
    • EDUC320  The Future of American Education
    • EDUC321  Effective Teaching and Lab
    • EDCP500  Introduction to Educational Technology.

You will receive another letter announcing the date of the Elementary Education program orientation.  During this orientation, you will take the Measure of Academic Proficiency and Progress (MAPP) test, receive your picture I.D. card, and be fingerprinted for a criminal background check.  This orientation is required since students will not be allowed to begin observations in classrooms without the background check.
