Program Requirements 

Core 1 - March through Mid-June 

 All Candidates: 

EDUC 3320 The Future of American Education (3 hrs.) 

EDUC 3321 Effective Teaching   (4 hrs.)  

  • Requires 15 hours of classroom observation 
  • Courses held Wednesday evening and all day on Saturdays to permit candidates to continue working 
  • Additional coursework may be possible to help candidates meet any remaining general education deficiencies 
  • Basic Skills/TAP 400 and Content Area certification tests must be passed 
  • Must obtain a Type 39 Illinois Substitute Teaching Certificate and complete a criminal background check thru Certified Background.com before the start of classes 

Core 2 - Mid-June through July (Summer Semester) 

All Candidates: 

ACA 6240 Theory to Practice (3 hrs.) 

ACA 6110 Initial Field Experience (1 hr.) 

ACA 7110 Research-Based Reading Instruction (3 hrs.) 

Additional Course requirements per discipline include: 

Elementary Candidates: ACE 6130 Teaching in the Content Areas (3 hrs.)

Secondary Mathematics Candidates: ACM 6140 Methods of Teaching Secondary Math I (3 hrs.)

Secondary Science Candidates (Biology or Chemistry): ACS 6150 Methods of Teaching Secondary Science (3 hrs.) 

  • All candidates attend classes Monday through Friday, eight (8) hours/day for six weeks 
  • Candidates must receive a Type 23 Provisional Elementary Teaching Certificate or a Type 25 Provisional Secondary Certificate prior to beginning the teaching residency 

Core 3 - August through May (Fall and Spring Semester)  

All Candidates Fall:  

ACA 6230 Field Experience I (1 hr.) 

ACA 8110 Student Learning and Assessment (3 hrs.) 

All Candidates Spring:  

ACA 6340 Field Experience Application II (1 hr.)    

ACA 8220 Action Research in Schools (3 hrs.)                  

Additional Course requirements per discipline include: 

Elementary Candidates Fall: ACE 7230 Reflective Teaching 1 (3 hrs.)    

Elementary Candidates Spring: ACE 8330 Reflective Teaching II (3 hrs.) 

Secondary Mathematics Candidates Fall: ACM Methods of Teaching Math II (3 hrs.) 

Secondary Mathematics Candidates Spring: ACS 8345 Advanced Methods Secondary Teaching (3 hrs.) 

Secondary Science Candidates (Biology or Chemistry) Fall: ACS 7250 methods of Teaching Science II (3 hrs.) 

Secondary Science Candidates (Biology or Chemistry) Spring: ACS 8345 Advanced Methods Secondary Teaching (3 hrs.) 

  • Candidates work under contract with a partner school district as full-time classroom residents  
  • During this period, candidates will be supported by a strong mentor program 
  • Additional course work possible if required to meet candidates’ general education deficiencies 

Core 4 - June through August (Summer Semester) 

All Candidates:  

ACA 8990 Best practice in Urban Settings (3 hrs.) 

ACA 7220 Teaching English Language Learners (3hrs.) 

ACA 8430 Teacher Leadership (3 hrs.) 

Optional  ACA 6410 Teaching in the Middle School (1 hr.)  

  • Candidates will complete documentation, analysis, and interpretation of experience in the program through presentation of portfolios 
  • Candidates may also  be recommended to complete an individualized professional development plan consisting of workshops in planning, classroom management, and professional educator dispositions 
  • Candidates may have to take additional coursework to meet  general education requirements
