December 1, 2010

Greetings,

Thank you for attending the 2010 Council of Councils at Governors State University last month. We were so very happy to host this important annual event and want to share some information with you.

We were lucky enough to have Tom Morelock, Executive Director and two of his staff from the State Universities Civil Service System office (SUCSS) and Linda Brookhart, the Executive Director of the State Universities Annuitants Association (SUAA) as guest speakers again this year. Also speaking, Barney Bryson from the University of Illinois, Champaign representing the Employees Advisory Council (EAC), GSU staff members Pulchratia Kinney-Smith, Human Resources Associate in our HR department, Geoffrey Bates, Curator of the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park, and State Representative Lisa Dugan. Our very own President Elaine Maimon gave a warm welcome to the attendees at lunch.

I’ve attached some important files for review and distribution to your co-council/senate members. Files attached include a contact sheet for all 12 state universities for future use. Also attached are the presentations that were delivered by Tom Morelock and his staff from SUCSS and Linda Brookhart, SUAA. Both presentations were filled with important issues and led to very interesting discussions. Another important file that I’ve attached is the history of the Council of Councils.

Guest speaker state representative Lisa Dugan talked about the state budget and gave us insight into the minds of her constituents. She provided much needed information about contacting state legislature during these tough economic times. One suggestion was to always hand write a letter, send it your state representative or senator through the US Mail. Do not email, do no sent postcards, make your letters personal. We must all pull together to save our benefits!

The round table discussions included subjects such as generating interest in council/senate membership, successful fun/fund raising ideas, coping with the budget crisis, classifications and their relationships to positions, and how to help staff senates/councils become more influential on campus.

Just before the day ended, the universities were selected for the next two Council of Councils.
