Research
Developing a Sexual Health Intervention for Women in Substance Abuse Treatment: Acquiring pilot data, Governors State University (2010 – present). • Conducting focus groups and collecting survey data with women in substance abuse treatment in Illinois to develop and pilot a sexual health intervention for use in women’s treatment modalities. Identifying variables related to sexual self-efficacy around communication, HIV risk and sexual self-esteem.
Examining Student Attitudes toward Research in an Addictions Studies Program, Governors State University (2009 – 2010). • Examined student attitudes toward research in Masters of Addictions Studies students; compared scores with a sample of community counseling students in order to assess programmatic needs for the development of a research track in Addictions Studies.
Post-Doctoral Fellow, Syracuse University – Advanced Rehabilitation Research and Disability Policy Training (2007-2008). • Conducted research on sexual self-esteem in college women and collected data to develop a shortened instrument of sexual self-esteem. Collaborated on a community domestic violence and women’s disability project; collaborated with community agencies to increase and improve community coordination around the intersection of domestic and sexual violence and women with disabilities through comprehensive needs assessment.
Dissertation, Widener University - Sexual Self-Esteem and Women in Substance Abuse Treatment (2005-2007). • Designed and conducted quantitative study to explore the construct of sexual self-esteem of women in treatment for alcohol and other drug (AOD) use. Qualitative Research Project, Widener University - Examining the Impact of Participation in a LGBT Specific Group in Drug and Alcohol Treatment (2004). • Conducted a qualitative research project on the impact of providing comprehensive LGBT services in drug and alcohol settings. Qualitative components utilized included the development of a conceptual model, participant interviewing, narrative analysis, coding categories and interpreting data. Grants:James, R. (2011).
