Welcome to the Department of Occupational Therapy
The Department of Occupational Therapy is dedicated to preparing the Occupational Therapists who will shape and lead the profession in the years to come. Our graduates are first and foremost Occupational Therapists, well-versed in the sciences and skills that enable clients to restore function and adapt to the new realities and limitations that follow life-altering events.
Doctor of Occupational Therapy (DrOT)
In keeping pace with the dynamic nature of our healthcare system, since January, 2009, the College of Health and Human Services has offered the Doctor of Occupational Therapy (DrOT) degree program for the advanced practice-prepared occupational therapist. Today's advanced practice occupational therapists must provide the best care possible based on the latest hard evidence.
The DrOT program will give OT practitioners the ability to find, interpret, synthesize and apply findings from the very latest research, theory and models of practice.
Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT)
The Master of Occupational Therapy program emphasizes an appreciation of the individual and imparts an understanding of cultural identities and responses. Our graduates work to make the profession and its services available to all – and to eliminate the health disparities that exclude many from the level of care and participation they deserve.
From Occupational Therapy Assistant to Occupational Therapist
In addition to our Master’s degree program, the Department has joined with the university’s School of Interdisciplinary Learning to offer an innovative program designed for Occupational Therapy Assistants (OTAs). The program allows OTAs to build on their current degree, and experience, to earn a bachelor’s degree. The bachelor’s curriculum is designed specifically to prepare OTAs for entry into a MOT program.
Conductive Education Certificate
The Department also offers cutting-edge training in Conductive Education through the Conductive Education Certificate. The Certificate, developed with a grant from the Coleman Foundation, provides a comprehensive background in the emerging field of Conductive Education. The Certificate is an excellent program of continuing education that brings both occupational and physical therapists to the fore in this exciting, and new, method of therapy.
