FAQs for the Department of Health Administration

Q.   How do I apply to the MHA program?

A.  All application materials and instructions are available on the web site through www.govst.edu/apply/.  All materials are submitted to the GSU Admissions Office.

Q.  Is the Program accredited?

A.  The Program is fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Health Management Education (CAHME).  More information on accreditation, standards, and its value can be found on the CAHME website at www.cahme.org.

Q.  Do I need an undergraduate degree in health administration to be admitted into the MHA?

A.  There is no restriction on the type on undergraduate degree a student must have.  There are, however, prerequisite courses in statistics, management, economics, accounting, and computer literacy that must be completed.

Q.  Do I have to take the prerequisites before I can be admitted to the MHA Program?

A.  No, but they must be successfully completed before taking the subsequent course.  For example, you cannot take Healthcare Management until you have completed the management prerequisite.

Q.  Is the Program or some of its courses offered on line?

A.  No.  All classes meet on campus in a traditional format.

Q.  How many credit hours are required to complete the degree?

A.  54 (18 courses) plus prerequisites.

Q.  How long does it take to complete the degree?

A.  The Program is designed to accommodate working adults choosing to obtain their education part-time.  Although it is possible to complete the Program as a full-time student, we can not guarantee that you can do so every semester.  Our typical student takes two courses per semester, or four courses per year.

Q.  What kind of job can I get with the MHA and how much money will I make?

A.  Graduates assume a variety of positions in a wide range of health care settings.  For a better idea of positions and salaries, go to the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) website at www.ache.org.

Q.  Can I discuss the Program further with an advisor or faculty member?

A.  You can contact Dr. Rupert Evans, Sr., DHA, MPA, FACHE, Assistant Professor/Graduate Program Director and Department Chair, at 708.235.2131, or revans@govst.edu.
