Examination/Proctor Information

To Request Distance Examination submit Form

How do I take examinations for television, correspondence, and online courses?

If you are taking a television, correspondence, or online course that has examinations that require a proctor, (i.e. NOT take-home exams, papers or projects) please review the following information carefully. Remember to review your course material and/or consult with your instructor(s) for dates, deadlines and specific policies regarding your course(s).

If you are on-campus or reside within 50 miles of GSU

Students residing within 50 miles of GSU will take examinations with their instructor at the days and times printed in the Governors State University Schedule of Classes or your course material. Room numbers will be posted at all entrances on class meeting and examination days. You may also review the room schedule for dates, locations and times. Remember, the most up-to-date information will always be posted near campus entrances. Please be prompt for all class orientations, meeting and exams, as instructors are not required to accommodate students who are tardy without a substantial and legitimate cause. The Academic Resource Center offers alternative examination sessions for midterm and final exams for students with extenuating circumstances who have obtained prior permission from the instructor. Please note that some classes DO NOT offer the option of making up exams. Some course instructors may penalize students for taking examinations at alternate times without prior permission, or for an unexcused absence on lab or examination days. Please refer to the Extended Learning Schedule of Classes, your instructor, and course materials for course specific policies and details.

If you are taking a correspondence course that has examinations that require a proctor (check your course materials or ask your instructor), and reside within 50 miles of GSU, please make arrangements to take your examination or examinations in the Academic Resource Center within the timeframe stipulated by your course instructor or course materials. Exams must be taken in consecutive order unless directed by your course instructor.

ALL students wishing to take examinations in the Academic Resource Center MUST contact the Office at (708) 235-3964 to schedule an appointment. TWO valid forms of identification will be required prior to sitting for an examination. Acceptable forms of identification include a current Drivers License or State Identification card, and a current GSU Student ID or class schedule.

Starting times are:

  • Mondays-Wednesday 1–3 p.m.
  • Thursdays, 4–7 p.m.
  • Saturday (once at end of trimester: call for date)

All examinations MUST be completed by the conclusion of each testing period. Please schedule testing appointments at least one week prior to the day you wish to take the exam. Testing days and times may be subject to change without notice.

If you reside at a distance greater than 50 miles from GSU

Students residing more than 50 miles away may opt to have examinations proctored subject to the discretion of GSU faculty and staff. Students wishing to have exams proctored should send in the Request for Examination Form as soon as possible, (at least 14 days prior to the published examination date if applicable). You may complete the request online or download the form and mail it to the School of Extended Learning. To view and print the form, you must have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader version 4 or above installed on the computer that you are using.

Please note that some classes DO NOT offer the option of having exams proctored. Refer to your course materials or instructor for details.

Some students will be working through a partnering community college and they should ask the college coordinator who the proctor will be. Otherwise, suitable proctors are: superintendent of schools, high school principal, university or college testing center, library director, registrar, or college administrator.

Exams may NOT be taken under the supervision of a member of your family or a friend, regardless of his or her academic qualifications. When submitting a request to have examinations proctored off-campus, be sure to include contact information about your local community college and public library.

Note: Any and all proctoring fees are the responsibility of the student.

Remember to pay close attention to deadlines established by your course instructor for the timely completion of coursework and examinations. It is the sole responsibility of the student to read and follow all applicable guidelines imposed by GSU or the course instructor regarding the conduct of on or off-campus testing. Governors State University reserves the right to refuse any requests for an off-campus proctor for any reason and at any time.

Please fill out and submit your distance examination request to the School of Extended Learning at GSU for processing. This link may ONLY be used to e-mail off-campus examination requests. If you are on-campus, or reside within 50 miles of GSU and need to schedule an examination, please contact Student Development at (708) 534-4090. It is very important that this form is filled out accurately and completely. The information that you submit will be used to locate a proctor for you.
