Art Majors

Art Majors – Prepare for a Career in a Creative Field

At Governors State University, art majors receive a professional undergraduate education with hands-on, creative studio work that covers a range of diverse materials.   On the way to earning a B.F.A. degree in Art, students learn how to express ideas and have the opportunity to develop their own artistic vision and voice.

Our art majors are taught by gifted faculty members, who are teachers as well as producing and exhibiting artists and publishing scholars.  The studio work includes painting, drawing, design, ceramics, printmaking, photography, digital imaging, and sculpture.  The Art programs are also a part of the Communication, Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) division of the College of Arts and Sciences that is comprised of the Division of Digital Learning and Media Design, The Center for Performing Arts, and the GSU Visual Art Gallery.

Art Majors – Develop Your Skills as an Emerging Artist

To be accepted into the undergraduate program, students must meet all university requirements as well as participate in an interview with the faculty, at which time, he or she will submit a portfolio of their work.  All of the details regarding the format for the portfolio can be found on the College of Arts and Sciences website.

GSU’s art majors must take both Art History I and II to fulfill general education and major requirements along with preparation studies in lower division courses in art history, history literature, anthropology, philosophy or art.  Along with general education requirements, classes are required in Art Studio, Photography and Digital Imaging, and Drawing to make up the rest of the lower division course work.  See website for the full requirements.

Undergraduate students interested in GSU’s minor in Art need to submit a proposal of study (and portfolio of past artwork) to the appropriate art faculty advisor for individual placement.  Our quality program provides students the fundamentals of the discipline by learning to shape perception, communicate distinct attitudes, and expand personal boundaries.

Governors State University offers students outstanding academic programs, activities and services.  In every college we have stellar programs and world-class professors; all focused on delivering academic excellence in a small-class setting.  Prepare yourself for a creative career by enrolling in our exceptional programs designed for undergraduate art majors.
