Yolanda McMillan—SIDL Graduate, April 2003
My experience at GSU and the Board of Governors program has been very rewarding—it has given me an opportunity to redeem my past mistakes. When I came to GSU three years ago I was looking for self- fulfillment. To finish something I had started. Coming back to school was not going to be easy. I got married, became pregnant, and returned to school all in the same year. I had no idea how I was going to bring home the bacon, fry it up in a pan, never let my husband forget that he was a man, go to school and be mommy at the same time. I was really learning what it was to be encouraged.
I had a hard mountain to climb, but I did it and I am leaving here with so much more than I bargained for. Never did I imagine making the dean’s list, winning a scholarship, doing a commercial for the Board of Governors program, and never did I imagine graduating. I am now a student at the Chicago School of Professional of Psychology, where I am working on my Master's degree in forensic psychology. I am also a substitute teacher working with children who have special needs. Thank you to the staff and faculty of the Board of Governors for uplifting me and giving me direction.
