| Pres. Maimon receives the 2014 Chicagoland ATHENA Leadership Award at the GSU Foundation Scholarship Luncheon |
Friday, April 25 Governors State University celebrated student successes and big ideas at the GSU Foundation Scholarship Luncheon.
The GSU Scholarship Luncheon is the university’s annual stakeholder event celebrating and acknowledging the achievements of GSU student scholarship recipients. The luncheon provides an opportunity to connect recipients with their donors to personally express their appreciation for the rich opportunities and experiences made possible thanks to their financial support. The luncheon also honors the philanthropic support of corporate, private, alumni and community partners, who make higher education attainable for GSU students. This year, the foundation presented its annual Distinguished Philanthropist Award to GSU faculty member Stephen R. Hyzny, Sr. and corporate partner, Accelerated Rehabilitation Centers, Ltd. for their support of GSU students and mission.
This year’s luncheon was attended by approximately 170 guests and generously sponsored by Com Ed and First Midwest Bank. NBC 5’s Art Norman emceed the event and captivated audience attention with his contagious personality and reflections of personal experiences alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Norman interviewed Dual Degree Scholarship recipient Kayla Randolph-Clark, who graduates this May and will attend Emory Law School in the fall on a scholarship, and second year Doctorate of Physical Therapy student, Alex Bennett. Both shared their student experiences, the importance of “paying it forward” and their appreciation for the scholarships that have made a significant difference in their lives and futures.
GSU Foundation CEO, Will A. Davis expressed gratitude for steadfast partnerships throughout GSU’s renaissance. GSU President, Dr. Elaine P. Maimon made special remarks encouraging the importance of presenting your truest self in life. Later in the program, Dr. Maimon was presented the prestigious 2014 Chicagoland ATHENA Leadership Award – an honor bestowed to exceptional leaders who inspire women to achieve excellence in their professional and personal lives.
The GSU Foundation awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to GSU students during the 2013-2014 school year.
