I enjoy teaching at GSU because the students are eager to learn and I am excited to train new candidates to work in the field of Special Education.  Many of our candidates come to campus with a wealth of practical experiences, which enhances the learning experiences for all.

I come to GSU with many years of teaching in the public schools. I have worked with different age groups in both inclusive and instructional programs. Because I spent so much time in the classroom, I feel I can share these experiences in order to provide my students with both the theoretical foundations as well as the practical applications.

Community service is an important part of the mission of GSU. I currently spend time being involved in organizations such as The Learning Disabilities Association and the Council for Exceptional Children. Through my work, I am able to share my knowledge and support for individuals with disabilities. I especially enjoy serving on the Scholarship Committee (LDA) because I am able to help provide financial assistance to individuals with Learning Disabilities as they pursue a college education.

Scholarship:  I have presented at several workshops and seminars. Most recently I presented at the Illinois Council for Exceptional Children- Illinois- 2013 Fall – “Tools for Effective Collaboration

Teaching:  As a special educator, I believe that all learners can achieve if given the appropriate opportunities. When I taught young children I learned how to meet the needs of each child by providing the individualized instruction that each person required. As an instructor at the college level, I see things in a very similar way. We must provide a well-rounded education to our students while also considering their unique talents and challenges.

I currently teach SPED 4100- Survey of Students with Exceptionalities; SPED 8400- Special Education Practicum 1; SPED 8500- Special Education Practicum II; and SPED 8600- Collaboration Skills for Teachers and Support Personnel. I also supervise Student Teachers (SPED 6999). Previously I taught SPED 8200- Learning characteristics of Learners with Exceptionalities.
