GSU Spring Commencement Celebrates Educational Achievement

University Park, IL, May 17, 2006 – On June 2, at 11 a.m. the friends and families of more than 500 graduates will witness their joyful achievement as they earn their degrees from Governors State University. The students who walk across the stage, move the tassel from left to right, and receive their diplomas have good reason to celebrate. They will be earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the 47 different programs from the university’s five colleges.

Governors State University’s spring commencement exercises will be held at the Holiday Inn Select Hotel & Convention Center. The 2007 Honorary Degree recipient is Arthur R. Velasquez, CEO and founder of Azteca Foods. Pamela Thompson of Homewood will deliver the student commencement speech.

Thompson, who also earned her bachelor’s degree from GSU in 2004, will earn her Master’s in Health Administration. She epitomizes the GSU student. She holds two jobs, has a family, and worked diligently to gain a university education. Thompson believes that the quality educational opportunities offered by Governors State University made her achievement possible.

“We are very proud of our graduates. They have excelled in school, many balancing work and family, to earn their degrees,” said Dr. Stuart Fagan, President of Governors State University. “Now they will excel as graduates, armed with the knowledge and skills they need for the future.”
